We need a captain who is not our goalkeeper, it needs to Vert instead. Discuss....

I disagree with the general premise, and as others have already said teams have done fine before with 'keepers as captains. Secondly, I disagree with general comments on our mentality as a team. I think the mentality is good, it's experience that is the issue. Young players are going to have iffy games, and have to learn, and I'm sure they will. The strange thing is that whilst we have a youthful naivety, it's more often the young players coming through (Mason, Bentaleb, Kane, etc.) who are the ones geeing the others up, or telling someone where they should have been, etc.

i don't even know what problem is on here with our team, we're performing at pretty much the same level we have been for years? just this time we have a very young team that can/should improve together. so yes, point to the utd collapse and say it's because of the lack of leaders and a young team and i'll point to 10 more examples with the likes of dawson, king, gallas, parker, van der vaart etc in the side.

a bit of cloth on the arm doesn't give you a set of balls, they should all be standing up and taking the game by the scruff

Good Captains need to back up the bollockings they give out with good performances too, Kane has the balls to do it and back it but i dont think the burden is worth it, and he sets a standard others should follow anyway.
Defender or CM for me, Fazio and Lloris are the two candidates but only one can back it up on the pitch.
Bentaleb could be one for the future once he matures, if Levy hasn't sold him off.

Regardless of the armband situation we're crying out for a leader at CB.

I would of added Dawson to that list... but I can already hear the chuckles of laughter from the majority of people on here :(.
I thought Dawson was playing like absolute crap for us at the end, but I also felt he was a fantastic captain and ambassador for the team.

Would love to see him back as a coach when he decides to hang up his boots.

Vertonghen needs to show he deserves to be first choice CB let alone suddenly being made captain. All in all think he's had a pretty pathetic season.
Right now I wouldn't be adverse to replacing him in the summer. What will be hilarious is if he starts making noises in the summer of needing CL football. He'll be playing a Modric or Bale role that simply doesn't fit him. He's been a major reason why we have been conceding so many goals and won't be getting CL.
He's playing next to a very inexperienced CB and the level of command he has shown of the defensive line has been woeful.

Captain has to be Lloris next season. I'd make Kane and Eriksen (?) vice captains.

Having played as a keeper for many years I was a skipper in my own right, as most keepers are, however, I needed someone on the pitch who was in the thick if it who could orchestrate proceedings higher up the pitch.
Over the last few years we've done it right with bringing in older, more experienced heads, Naybet & Davids spring to mind instantly.
This is the type of signing we need to make over the summer if none of our seasoned pros are able to step up to the mark.

Hate to say it but I'm not really a JV fan as a defender

As someone said he's a Rolls Royce of a footballer but far too casual and as quiet as a field mouse on the pitch, especially defending set pieces

Bentaleb looks the one if he keeps progressing but Kane might want it and who's going to argue if he stays in anything like this kind of form....

Vertonghen is not only the most overrated player at the Club, but also arguably the most overrated in the whole league. I don't want him as captain - not at all. I'm delighted with Hugo as the skipper.

Rollys-Royce of a defender my arse, he's been making error after error for a good while now and is a major reason why we have struggled in defence for a long while now. I still can't believe the majority fail to see or acknowledge it. I think it's just because people like him that he gets an easier time, he's been poor for best part of two seasons now. His attitude doesn't help either, he clearly thinks he's better than he is.

Vertonghen captain? Your having a laugh!
We need to sell him and buy a better defender. I choose my words carefully we need a DEFENDER that can defend, not a ball footballer playing at the back.

Captain is an outdated role, it's basically given to the first name on the teamsheet these days

Given that Lloris IS the captain, IS one of the first names on the team sheet, IS one of our better and more consistent players, IS an experienced international, IS a good spokesman, IS a good role model, IS currently on a long term contract and seemingly happy to stay at Spurs, why the f*ck should we even be discussing who else should be captain?

And that is before we consider his drop dead gorgeous missus.

Seriously, Verts has other things to worry about at the moment, and the others are still learning. But most of the youngsters know each other pretty well and seem to have no problems geeing each other up on the pitch.

Maybe Bentaleb for the future. Steve perryman was 20 when made captain.

But for the time being we got more to worry about than Lloris being captain. IMO.

A post rating isn't quite enough. You, Sir, are the winner.
