We need players with character and personality like Holtby. He is what supporting a club like Spurs is all about. Getting behind a player who clearly likes the club and its fans. Im sure we wont sell him, but if we do I would honestly be absolutely furious.

Is there room for sentiment anymore? When a team is trying to achieve a spot in the Champions League for instance.

Do you have the same view on Michael Dawson?

Such relationships between fans and players are so rare these days. There is nothing I would like more than for one of our current player's to resonate with the fans like Ledley did for instance - a player who's ability progressed with the clubs ambition (sort of).

I don't think there is room to keep a player on sentiment alone, but Holtby offers a lot more than just sentiment. However, sentiment and passion from a player still does count for a lot. I agree that the relationships with the fans are rare, I think we need to encourage it more. I still believe there is a place for loyalty in the game. This doesn't mean you have to be a one club player, but it does mean that you need to show passion, enjoyment and an appreciation for the virtues of the club.

Regarding Dawson, I'm a fan of him. He was important last year, because he managed to stay fit and he had some decent performances. I have no problem keeping him at the club, but similarly I do see the need to reduce the squad. But, if he chooses to stay and fight for his spot, I respect that because he wants to play at Spurs.
