The way everyone put their bodies on the line for 90 minutes and fought as a team was great and everyone worked brilliantly as a team. That’s the kind of character we need, especially in games like these.

There is big spirit in the team. When you go out on the pitch you feel that everyone wants to fight for each other – we’ve built this special dressing room atmosphere. If you’ve got that atmosphere like we did today then we can do something special this season.

Well, actually, no: no one said this kind of thing last season. That's the kind of thing people said every week or two prior to Redknapp's departure. No one has said it since.

Holtby is clearly a man who runs on an inexhaustible well of enthusiasm, so it's probably wise to discount his gushing tendencies by 20% or so.

But still, no one said this kind of stuff last season, nor really the season before. It was more of a po-faced 'there is a good atmosphere in the squad ... really' kind of thing.

If this is what Pochettino's style of man-management achieves, then we do have some hope that we have found a manager who can combine Redknapp's skill in handling players with AVB's detailed tactical approach.

Let's see how it goes, but this is very encouraging.

Poch has been brought in like the last manger to coach players and get the best out of what we have. He has made a good start. There is of course a long, long way to go but a decent start is no bad thing on the journey

"put their bodies on the line"

Really hate this term, has infected football. You kick a ball round a pitch for millions of pounds, you're not Ron Kovic

That is a complete and utter disregarding of the truth.

I am not going to waste time searching for quotes, but I remember Lewis himself saying almost the same thing when AVB was in charge. Kyle Walker, Hugo, Michael and even the departing Tom Huddlestone all said similar.

Some of them said the dutiful thing in an obligated tone of voice, hence my reference to 'po-faced' comments.

It doesn't take much sensitivity to tone for one to tell the difference between 'yes, all the players like the gaffer' and proper enthusiasm.

The team with van der Vaart, Modric, Bale and Defoe obviously loved playing together and working together. There was a sense of excitement oozing out of the camp that diminished gradually during the 2012/13 season and was conspicuous by its total absence last year, as perhaps was best represented by the change in Vertonghen's facial expressions and body language throughout last season.

The only player whom I recall making really enthusiastic comments was Bale in his last season with us, but he was only ever referring to his own relationship with AVB, which was obviously very beneficial to his development, not to the team as a whole.

It wasn't beneficial to the team as a whole?

You are deluded.

He only carried us to our highest ever points total in the Premier League...

Nail on head (hopefully!).

You're an obnoxious sort, aren't you?

Of course he did, he's a bloody good manager and he had a squad full of high quality players, including (that season) a star player to serve as a focus.

But AVB is nowhere nearly as good at handling players as Redknapp - that must be obvious to anyone who can master the concept that it is possible to criticise someone without playing heroes-and-villains. Redknapp is a master at massaging egos and forming squads into teams. AVB isn't as personality-blind as Hoddle, but he's not got a great record of fomenting team spirit at any of his clubs, including at Tottenham.

You seem to be confusing me with some of the adolescent, over-reactive fuckwits who hang around here, who either hate a player or manager or love him - and ignore everything that doesn't fit their preconceived view.

Don't.

It wasn't beneficial to the team as a whole?

My sentence was a bit confusing. Bale's positive comments weren't about the team as a whole, they were only about his own relationship with AVB.

We need players with character and personality like Holtby. He is what supporting a club like Spurs is all about. Getting behind a player who clearly likes the club and its fans. Im sure we wont sell him, but if we do I would honestly be absolutely furious.

He's going to a very handy player under Porch and should never have been loaned out

Let's not start the personal insults please, I don't know you and you don't know me.

I am not confusing you for anything.

I have only made a comment based on your post in which you were actually trying to justify your preconceived view. A view which may well be entirely correct and representative of the truth.

However, Holtby said the exact same comments under AVB with exactly the same enthusiasm, and dare I say it - genuineness.

Tom Huddlestone's comments say it all for me, he is the only player's comment's I have taken as informative in years. He listed all the good and the bad about the AVB reign, and if memory serves me correct he also done the same after Jol and Ramos departed.
