Verts is a proven cptain for Ajax and Belgium. Would do a grand job.

Plus if/when Lloris becomes a regular he is captain for a small football club called the France National Team. Gallas captained Chelsea, probably Arsenal too.

I pesonally prefer Daws, but sadly AVB disagrees. Of course bearing in mind Lennon ended up with the band, I don't think he has a Scooby, personally.

Or doesn't care. Captaincy is overrated in football anyway - it's not like cricket or rugby where it's an important role. Real leaders don't need no armbands.

Or is waiting till Jan to give it to his favourite little Portuguese maestro.

Would have said Kaboul but Vertonghen *is* captain material. He'll be best defender in the Prem before too long and the best in Europe.

Absolutely brilliant.

Agree with Dan. Lloris vice.

Right now it should be Verts by default. By the time Kaboul returns, the team will be playing so well there would be no need to change the captain.

Three of the main functions of a football captain are

1) receive and disseminate bench intructions
2) arbitrate on-pitch confrontations
3) motivate and inspire the team

I think the lack of a solid, experienced, fixed captain is one reason our team looks and acts like demotivated and at times completely bone idle.

I think over the years the importance of the captaincy has really diminished. It's more a kind of symbol for the fans that having any real meaning on the pitch. The most successful teams have 3/4 players who you could call "captain".

I think its sad but its modern day football for you

Or at least some kind of leader that shows initiative. I feel we often lack going forward because of this, something that Van der Vaart was very good at. He would take responsibility and make those "impossible" passes or make himself available for a pass when we were devoid of any creativity. I feel that we've lost some of that now with both him and Luka gone.

Having said that, I'm expecting things to change during the next couple of months. Our new midfield needs time to gel and I'm sure that by january we will look in tip top shape. New players, new system, new manager.

As others have said, Verts is just bedding in - for the long-term I think it will be him (unless we get someone even more super-fantastic).

Why do you say this?

Parker will hardly get game time for us with Sandro and Dembele playing so well.

Gallas should be dropped for Caulker.
I disagree, I think Parker will easily replace Sandro. I think Sandro is brilliant but Parker is simply better and once fit will regain his place.

I think as a captain you want someone intelligent who understands the game and can organize the team. To me that is probably Vertonghen, but I don't know the players well enough to say for certain. Moutinho was kind of AVB's brain on the field at Porto so AVB might be waiting until we attempt to get him in January because that is who he wants as captain.

Think Parker when fit and if he is in the side, which at the minute I think he will be with Dembele pushed further forward. Parker or Vertonghen are our natural leaders.

Vertonghen is bloody brilliant.
