Tottenham are one of the teams that will be on red alert as Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy reportedly has a release clause in his contract of £15million despite scoring an incredible 14 goals in eight Bundesliga games.

Feel like this guy is the bargain basement equivalent of Ivan Toney. A striker who’s never shown this kind of form before that’s having a purple patch.

I agree that there would be an element of risk, but I think I'd prefer a £15m gamble on Guirassy than a £50m gambler in Toney. I haven't seen much of him play, so have no idea how much he adds in terms of build-up or out of possession (he'd need to be able to press effectively), but he wouldn't need to maintain his current scoring form to be significantly more prolific than Richarlison.

A lot of us (myself included) were too quick to write off Jamie Vardy as a "one season wonder". Sometimes players simply develop late, or overcome injury struggles / start taking their career more seriously midway through.

Before his current "purple patch" (14 goals in 9 games / a goal every 46 minutes), Guirassy's stats weren't exactly bad. He scored 1 in 2 last season.

2022-23: 11 goals in 22 games (a goal every 150 minutes) in Bundesliga
2021-22: 9 goals in 37 games (a goal every 110 minutes) in Ligue 1
2020-21: 10 goals in 27 games (a goal every 177 minutes) in Ligue 1
2019-20: 9 goals in 23 games (a goal every 214 minutes) in Ligue 1
Before this he was <23 years old and hadn't properly broken into a top-flight first team.

His stats have gradually improved over the past four and a bit seasons, with him consistently scoring about 10 league goals per season, despite not being a guaranteed starter. Minutes per goal is more meaningful than goals per game, as he was often utilised as a sub during some seasons. His slight dip in minutes per goal last season is easily explained by him moving to a stronger league, but he's now flying in Bundesliga.

For what it’s worth I don’t want Toney either. Maybe this guy could be ok as a back up or whatever, but it feels like a Crystal Palace/Fulham/Brentford level signing.

Whether he's on just one hell of a purple patch or an actual late bloomer is largely how fans predictably interpret these situations. What is not debatable is that his goalscoring record in 2023 is seriously impressive and his overall game look very polished, and as a fan of highly technical and complete strikers it's only made me intrigued in watching more of him and his team once he comes back from injury (hopefully not serious).

If it’s true that he’s 15 mil. Then that’s got to be worth a gamble. I watched his YouTube goals this year because I was interested to see who was out scoring Kane.

if that isn’t worth a bet, I don’t know what is.

Its not just 15 mill though is it, its a squad place and wages.

If he turns out to be a dud, he just joins the long list of players who we aren't good enough but we can't shift. Lloris, Ndombele, Dier I'm sure we would be happy to let go on a free, but no way in hell will they leave unless anyone matches their current deals which noone will do.

If we go for him because he has been thoroughly scouted and identified as the best option for the position: great, sign him up.

If we go for him cos he's cheap and as a bit of a punt, it's a massive risk.

We not into Gift Orban anymore?
I never was personally. Looked technically terrible which never translates well to the PL where defenders are on your first touch and capitalise on small mistakes which he would make frequently. Just looked a decent finisher with a poor all-round game in a purple patch to me from the start.

Good finishing is still very important imo. I'd like us to sign another striker in the mould of Defoe who can score out of nothing, rockets in his boots.

Yes it is but getting to that point becomes a rare occurrence when you have a poor first touch, dribbling and are unable to play with your back to goal at higher levels. He just looked like a novice with a powerful shot to me and I stand by that now. Nowhere near a PL level player.

Toney has been scoring consistently for several seasons, though. I'd say this guy is more like Michu.

Any no.9 we sign in January would presumably be a back-up to Son. Son has looked far more effective centrally than at LW this season (7 goals & 1 assist from 6 games at CF / 0 goals & 0 assists from 3 games at LW).

If it wasn't for the reportedly low release clause, I would be hoping one of our rivals signs him for a huge fee and then he flops big time. However, the idea of one of our rivals signing a potentially prolific CF for only £15m kind of makes me want us to snap him up first, even if he goes on to be underwhelming (like Richarlison has been) and the only benefit is that a rival has to spend an extra £50m+ on someone else who isn't any better. My main concern is that he's potentially just what Arsenal need. He'll almost certainly move to a bigger club either in January or next summer, so if he is capable of the step up, I would hope he does that with us or a non-English club. Had Bayern not just signed Kane, I would expect them to go for him.

Is he constantly offside like Defoe too? 😅
