That's funny, Dembele was the most highly rated youngster at the same club and he's hardly pulling up any trees at Barcelona, same with Malcom.

We've been down this road twice before, there's a constant theme with French players lacking the mentality or discipline when they move to bigger leagues, even Lucas hasn't hit the ground running at Spurs and he's an experienced international, guess he can fall back on his value on transfermarkt though...
Pretty sure Dembele has been out performing Coutinho recently, hence the transfer rumors regarding him. . I mean you saw what he did against us. He's 21 and has 13 goals and 8 assists so far this season.

Involved in a goal every other game despite various injuries and his professionalism being questioned

I’m with you on this. We should treat the French league with caution. Our scouts don’t seem to be able to identify decent players there and the guy heading it up is meant to be an expert on that country. It’s bizarre we’ve been so bad at recruiting from there unless the scout is shit at his job or the players aren’t as good as everyone thinks.

Agree on this. And this has more to do with our scouts being shit when it comes to that league.

Pretty sure we've done the whole Ligue 1 pace thing before and failed twice.

I don't think ShadyDan is wrong in what's saying here, we have tried and failed twice but equally, as others have said, I would never rule signing players from that league now as a result.

I mean flippin' eck, if we went by that logic then we'd have to eliminate most of the major leagues in world football.

EVERY signing carries risk, it's just whether you're scouting/research has been thorough enough to mitigate against that risk. In the past we haven't done enough but hopefully the last 2 windows of doing nothing has given us time to improve the process.

For the record though I wasn't suggesting we sign Sarr, just commenting on his performance. Nicolas Pepe though, I'd be happy for us to go in for him.

Are people really interpreting it as "we should never look at the league again"? Such black and white thinking.

I very well may be wrong, but I thought Njie and Nkoudou were holdovers from Paul Mitchell not Hitchin.

Some of the best talent at reasonable prices are still found in the French and Dutch leagues, though that could be about to change with the Dutch.

British leagues and development programs also have fantastic talents Leeds Sheffield London are breeding grounds

Mitchell was lauded on here as the greatest scout ever, as have all his successors, in reality the scouts are only part of the process of player acquisition. We’ll never know how good they actually are as scouts, there’s too many variables imo

I don't think anybody is saying that. I think it's a classic case of a disagreement leading to polarisation and straw men.

We shouldn't sign players based on MOTD, we shouldn't sign players based on a good performance against Arsenal, we shouldn't ignore players becuase we bought some duds, and so on. Everybody valuing their own opinions more highly than other peoples, including paid professionals - classic ego-centric bias.

It's all largely irrelevant anyway. but I think, contrary to some posters, we shouldn't be taking punts in Ligue 1 or on non-British players at this stage largely because of the home-grown squad criteria and also because we now need more than that to progress. Signing potential has got us where we are, but we're now in a cycle of diminishing returns - trying to improve that extra few percent to take us up another level. To do that we need more established talent. Whether we will sign it or not, that's what we need.

With City under FFP investigation and Chelsea already on a ban Could mean two huge spenders out the market. Convenient for Real who will surely rebuild but good for everyone else too?

Chelsea have so many loaned players and have already made a signing in Pulsic. Man C have so much money they'll pay Uefa off.

BBC gossip suggesting this morning that they are planning a €300m (£259m) bid to take Neymar to the Bernabeu.
