B-C was like a bizarro world scout, hated players who actually changed games and was utterly in love with those who could make a match completely sterile and boring. I still think his perfect version of football was that soccer clip from the simpsons

He loved avb’s Style of football

If only BC was still on here he’d be right up for Embolo, one of his future “Uber-strikers” to watch.

Could have been a very good player tbh, horrible injury early on at Schalke which broke his ankle, tibia and caused damage to more than one ligament. Don't think he'll ever reach the potential he had.

Horrible tackle too.

I was thinking lately about our financial situation. We probably assumed CL group stage money in financial predictions I guess. But I don't think anyone was thinking about CL semi-final money. So if we somehow manage to get there we will receive like 30mln extra to the budget which then we can spend on transfers. With that money we can buy one player! I think Grealish is back on track ;)
How much would be left from that extra money once the players bonuses have been paid ?

Ismaila Sarr was very good last night, scored a crackin header but just generally took Monreal to the cleaners. Unbelievable pace. He's still quite raw but I believe Steve Hitchin focuses heavily on Ligue 1 iirc so I'm sure he'll be aware of him and Nicolas Pepe.

Lille actually have some other good players. Jonathan Bamba on the other flank is a nice player and Jonathan Ikone (CAM) as well. Not sure either of those 2 are good enough for us but they're fun to watch. Beyond those 2 I like the look of Thiago Mendes (CM). There's a reason why they're 2nd in the league right now.

I thought Sarr's ball control was very poor. He has pace and may be good with his head but his ball control and passing were dreadful.

Pretty sure we've done the whole Ligue 1 pace thing before and failed twice.

It’s obviously not but so it’s just as flippant as dismissing the most productive exporting league in the world just because we made a couple of poor signings.

Yeah we've been burnt twice chasing unknowns from the same league so why in God's name do we want to do that again?

Oh I know why it's because he showed a bit of pace in a one off match and has just become flavour of the day...

It’a much the same as people watching MOTD and saying sign X player who’s scored that week. Obviously there’s always a flavour of the week, but the fact is the French league produces more players than anywhere else at the moment, perhaps even overtaking Brazil. I just find dismissing players who are impressing over there strange. It’s not even like Njie or Nkoudu were even that impressive for their respective teams, they were very much punts.

They were punts just like Sarr is, check out his stats compared to both Njie's and Nkoudo's before we signed them and they are similar.

Sarr is very highly rated. Probably most rated young player after Mbappe
Rennes bought him for 17m when he was 19. I'm quite sure it's their record signing as Rennes mostly promotes young players from their academy.
Right now he's valued at 27m in transfermarkt. So it's def not because he showed a bit of pace against arsenal. Maybe it's you that only learned about him yesterday

That's funny, Dembele was the most highly rated youngster at the same club and he's hardly pulling up any trees at Barcelona, same with Malcom.

We've been down this road twice before, there's a constant theme with French players lacking the mentality or discipline when they move to bigger leagues, even Lucas hasn't hit the ground running at Spurs and he's an experienced international, guess he can fall back on his value on transfermarkt though...

This is just bizarre. You do know who the World Champions are right? Any transfer where a player moves to a new league carries risk. That’s what scouting and research try to mitigate, but never truly can know how a player can adapt.

Just an observation, but there are currently 539 players registered to play in Ligue 1, we had bad experience from taking 2 punts out of 539 and you’re saying we shouldn’t bother anymore based on that? I’m sorry but that makes no sense at all.

But I do know where you’re coming from and the point you’re trying to make. We do not know the full financial implications of the stadium finally being open and operable, but if we still have to follow the same transfer model for the next few years before we can splash the cash, we have to try these kinds of signings because we simply can’t afford to get the talent we need.

Hopefully not, and we can get the 3/4 signings we clearly need to get to the next level and freshen up the squad, splash a bit of moola around the place to welcome us into the new stadium but if we can’t afford to do that then we will have to settle for potential on the cheap. It’s very hit and miss but to suggest we stop all together because of 2 bad apples is a little crazy.
