Barmby was a tough one for me. I loved 'the famous five' and thought we had a really exciting team.

Klinsmann was tough but knew he was short term. I thought Barmby would be with us for years.

Campbell for obvious reasons. Him and Ledley together would have been immense.
Mousse Dembele was one of my favourite players to watch so I was sad to see him leave although I can understand why as he was on the wain. When he lost the ball to pogba in the FAC semi and they scored it seemed like he was running out of gas but what an awesome and unorthodox player he was - a freak really.

Campbell for me.

Every other transfer, I could rationise - Bale went to Madrid for a world record fee, Carrick, Berbatov went to the (at the time) biggest club in the country, Modric went to one of the best clubs in the world etc etc.

But, Campbell....After everything he said, going to those fucks for free......I'm getting angry just thinking about it again. Easily the most painful and still raw.
Easily number one for me too.

Keane/VdV are runners up, but Campbell going down the road still brings up so much anger in me.

Keane to Liverpool was awful. That one really hurt at the time

Agreed, we were just starting to look like something and I felt Liverpool were on the decline.

The other one for me was Bale, he was everywhere in the media. I remember walking into Sainsburys and seeing a lifesize cardboard lucasiade (SP) of him and I couldn't look it in the eyes.

Campbell. Completely out of nowhere. No transfer fee to spend on a replacement. And, worst of all, signing for that lot.

Carrick. Jol said he had to choose between Carrick or Mendes on who was to be his main man in midfield and he chose Carrick, who then shat on us and went to Utd.

Berbatov. We were always a stepping stone to him, which pissed me off.

Modric & Bale. But fair play we refused Modric to Chelsea and made sure we rang Real's financial bell once they were inevitable.

Stephen Carr. Loved him and was really pissed when he went to Newcastle.

David Pleat has done a lot of wonderful things for Tottenham, but his treatment of Graham Roberts was a fucking disgrace and I was gutted when he went to Rangers. As our enthusiasm for Romero shows, we do love a player with a bit of steel to him, and Graham certainly had that.
Roberts went to Rangers for the signing on fee to help clear his gambling debts.

Ginola really hurt.

Bale, though. I went on holiday and completely disconnected from real life for a month. When I left, Bale was definitely staying. When I returned, the Bale thread was a million pages long. Obviously not a great sign.

Of those two, Ginola hurt most because I was young and tender, and Ginola was our special magical player.

I think I've just blanked out the pain from that no23 centre back - it was so horrific.

The ones I can still remember the pain for were Gazza and Jürgen

I was too young to understand Gazza, but it just felt so sad. Jurgen was what made us special - and to lose that so quickly (good shout above on Barmby - that didn't really make sense)

It also hurt quite a bit to lose Kanoute, but maybe that was just me.

I cried like a baby when Dele left. It was a surprise even for me how much I liked him. He was just days younger than me and it was so damn good to follow his progress in the club simultaneously while I started my own work. He was like a brother for me. And also the poster boy for the new Tottenham under Pochettino.. It was so damn hard.
Dele for me too. Also close in age so felt a connection to him. Was sad to see him leave our club but moreso disappointed that he left taking a proverbial step backwards rather than forwards by leaving for Everton.

Dele had the world at his feet after achieving so much at such a young age but has had so much pressure and expectations mounted on him. One of my greatest fears is in life is not achieving my potential, and for Dele’s sake, I hope that he is still able to achieve his.

Not a transfer but Lesley’s knees falling to pieces. He kept going but could have been so much more. Very painful to witness his career end before it’s time. Modders was the one I hated losing such class.

Been great reading through this thread and reminding myself of some of the great players we have had in the not too distant past, and I mean some truly outstanding ones like Modric and Bale etc.
Unfortunately circumstances dictated that we often had to sell some of these players, so that we never achieved what we should have done.
Hopefully there will be more chances going forward of the planets aligning and us getting a truly outstanding and trophy winning team together.

Bale because he was genuinely a one man team who could have changed our fortunes so much earlier. Wouldn’t have wrecked his body and become super injury prone like what happened at Madrid either.

Campbell hurt, obviously because of where he went, but mostly because of the lies, his massive lack of integrity. He was our beloved club captain, the boy who climbed to the top, so loved and adored.
The contrast with the man who followed in his footsteps is stark.

Hoddle. Literally the first time I had my heart broken. I was just about to turn 15 and learnt about him leaving when I was doing my paper round and it was on the back page of the Mirror. I stood halfway up someone’s garden path at 06:30am with tears in my eyes.

Judas, the disingenuous snake. Could have gone anywhere else, even for free and I could have understood it…but not there. Ever.

The thing about Campbell is he still doesn't think he done anything untoward, and can't understand the bile spewed at him. A true sociopath

Roberts went to Rangers for the signing on fee to help clear his gambling debts.
That’s interesting. I thought the story put about was that he fell out with Pleat and pretty much got forced out.
sounds sad I know but Roberts was one of my favourites too and wrote a letter to him at Rangers and got a 3 page reply back from him (which I still have) saying he did not want to leave spurs and felt forced out - who knows.
Top guy though Graham - I spoke to him outside the ground about 10 years ago about the letter and said it meant a lot to me at the time - he said ‘glad you could read it’ ?. Also bumped into him in Madrid at the CL final.
No matter what really happened he is a spurs legend.
