If Emerson signs we could end this window with 8 full backs/wing backs and only one out and out striker, who often misses 4-6 weeks each season through injury.

It wouldn’t be the first time we asked an Irish defender called Doherty to fill in up front.

Looking like another season of pinning all our goal scoring hopes on Son & Kane.

Atleast we had Bale last season to chip in with some goals.

Our defence will have to keep up this form all season, if we aren’t to as score many as we’d like.

Pleased that we've signed another player (Emerson) to strengthen our starting 11, assuming that it's confirmed.

I couldn't care less how many right backs we have. I'm sure the others will be more keen to leave when they realise they're not going to play at all - and we absolutely shouldn't not sign a top player because we've got average ones refusing to budge.

I'd be very disappointed if we didn't sign Traore and/or a creative midfielder or striker though.

We've done decent business so far, but we're light and/or lacking quality in some pretty important positions. Let's see how it plays out. I suspect someone like Aouar may come back into the picture late on if all other avenues are closed, as didn't we have info that the deal was more or less in place?

To be fair, I know a lot about Pacos and they are not the same team as last season. Notably because they lost players and the coach who got then 5th moved to a bigger club.

Scarlett will need to be eased in to PL football and I hope we don't get to a situation where he has expectation on him because Kane and Son are out.

Thanks for the info re Paco.
Oh yeah I agree we don't want to just throw him in at the deep end, but I also think if he's deemed good enough, he's old enough. Wasn't greenwood a similar age when he started breaking through at Utd?

If it's a case of waiting a year to get a proper replacement/backup for Kane of the quality of Vlahovic or Martinez I can totally understand not wanting to spend big on a stop-gap. People always moan that we have no long term planning, but signing a striker just in case Kane and Son are both out at the same time for a few weeks is pure short termism.

I don't see anyone having kittens in case Hugo and Gollini are both out at the same time, or Skipp and PEH.

Remember early 2020 when both Kane and Son got long-term injuries and the COVID break absolutely saved us? I just can't believe we're running the risk of that happening again.

Hope Trix and WLB are on the money and these journo briefings are just bluffing.

I don't know why Emerson is spoken like he would prevent us getting someone else in another position. We need a right back, 2 of our current 3 are not good enough. If this so happens to be the position that we can fill today then it's good business. It won't stop us trying for other positions too. Ndombele and Aurier can sit at home playing FIFA for all I care. It will just mean some players left out of the squad for Europe. I really don't know why it matters if we have a bloated squad as long as we have enough quality.
The assumption is probably that the overall wage budget would be the barrier, but I like to think that's not too much of a problem:

Bale, Toby, Lamela & Sissoko combined will have been earning much more than our new signings and loan returns combined. That's before Hart, Rose, Gazzaniga (and anyone else I'm forgetting) are factored in.

If Emerson comes in without Doherty/Aurier leaving, although we'll be paying wages to four RBs, Tangana must be on low wages and we know Aurier will be off the books within a year.

Ndombele is on £200k per week. If we don't sell him, we probably need to attempt to reintegrate him, as leaving him to rot in the reserves would make it even harder to sell him for a half-decent fee next summer (i.e. cost us £xx millions).

No striker being brought in is bizarre. Still think we missed a big trick not going for Ings. We are relying on two players to score the bulk of our goals., if Son and Kane get injured we are stuffed, we have a totally raw Dane Scarlett carrying the weight of the team.

Bringing in Traore does nothing to alleviate this either, as he can't score in a brothel.
Ings doesn’t fit. Nuno plays one central striker which means you’d be paying 30m plus big wages for a guy with little to no resale value who isn’t going to play outside cups unless Kane is injured. If we were going to buy a forward one who can play centrally or wide would have been the one to go for

RE : No striker, I remember writing an article many years ago that Levy followed Lyon's Aulas and his methods of building a successful squad as outlined in Soccernomics. Could be that this methodology is still in place somewhat with Paratici/Levy.

"Here are a few more of Lyon’s secrets. First, try not to buy center forwards. Center forward is the most overpriced position in the transfer market. (Goalkeeper is the most underpriced, even though keepers have longer careers than outfield players; in baseball the most overpriced position pre-Moneyball was pitcher.) Admittedly Lyon “announced” itself to soccer by buying the Brazilian center forward Sonny Anderson for $19 million in 1999, but the club mostly scrimped on the position afterward. Houllier left OL in 2007 grumbling that even after the club sold Malouda and Eric Abidal for a combined total of $45 million, Aulas still wouldn’t buy him a center forward."

"Here are the twelve main secrets of the transfer market in full:
A new manager wastes money on transfers; don’t let him. -
Use the wisdom of crowds.
Stars of recent World Cups or European championships are overvalued; ignore them.
Certain nationalities are overvalued.
Older players are overvalued.
Center forwards are overvalued; goalkeepers are undervalued. -
Gentlemen prefer blonds: identify and abandon “sight-based prejudices.”
The best time to buy a player is when he is in his early twenties. -
Sell any player when another club offers more than he is worth.
Replace your best players even before you sell them.
Buy players with personal problems, and then help them deal with their problems.
Help your players relocate."

should absolutely be signing Emerson this summer. Aurier leaves next year on a free. Emerson is 30m this summer prob 50m+ next year. Tanganga can go back to CB rather than.ake shift RB

I can see why people think Pacos are 5th best team in Portugal but they punched above their weight and this season I expect them to finish much lower.

He definitely will need that chance to make his name, I agree. Hopefully he can take it. It can be a huge hit to his confidence and development if he is thrown in and can't score or effect the game. He'll he's plenty more game time in the ECL.

To be honest, I am a little worried about Skipp and Hojbjerg getting injured.

So hopefully we have something up our sleeve.

Yes, but probably not out of choice. As he'll have no other option but to.

Scarlett really struggled against a mid-table Portuguese side - he's not ready yet IMO.
Scarlett didn’t get any service at all against a mid table Portuguese side - I don’t know if he’s ready or not but you can’t tell from one shambolic team performance
