I'm still surprised we never moved for a drastically cut price Klose. I think he may have even been available on a free transfer. Not a long-term automatic first choice option, but someone who can play the lone role well with buckets of experience.

He'll be cup-tied for six games - that's all. He can still play in the remaining 36 league game, the FA and League Cups and whatever Euro action we may still be involved in after Xmas. It would be even more short-termist to not buy him on the basis that he would miss a handful of (albeit important - but not vital) CL group league game. The objective for 'Arry and Levy is to do well in the Premier League again - not win the Champions League. Those games really are just a lucrative bonus...

Drogba is 32 and I'd still spend £12m on him!

This!

I'll probably get shot down for this, but I really don't care that Fabiano wouldn't be able to play in the Champions League. I really don't care that he is 29 (hardly old, just no good for a selling-club).

I care that he has a great scoring record, is exactly the sort of striker we need, will significantly raise the profile of our club, and would be available to help us try to get Champion's League qualification again.

There is still a slight risk of another team bidding on Fabiano, and if that team is more attractive than Spurs (which obviously hasn't happened yet) then he would be interested in them. The more close we get to the deadline the more desperate Seville will be.

I said the other day that a striker like Fabiano would be vital in the CL but on reflection the truth is we aren't going to win the CL, the league is much more important in terms of maintaining status. It is vital we are challenging for 3rd ot 4th for the next few years and we desperately need a finisher who is stronger than Defoe and Pav with a better range of finishes than Defoe.

Personally if I had my way we'd off load Keane and Defoe and bring in Suarez and either Fabiano or Huntelaar. Or any two from those three.

Finding the uber (hold up, with pace, skill and finishing) striker will take longer anyway - they are gold dust.

Agree on this, but I saw one article claiming he's on €140K a week, though that seems rather hard to believe!

Also Klose played in Germany's 4-2-3-1 in Euro 2008 to the World Cup but I think he's better with a partner (he was great with Klasnic at Bremen), pretty unselfish player.

There can't be many teams in europe who would be prepared to pay more than 12 million for a 29 yo Fabiano.

As much as I think Klose would be a good signing, it's telling that not a single club in Europe has been linked with him or shown an interesting in signing him. Presumably he'd be cheap(ish), so there must be a suspicion in the game that he just somehow over-performs in major international tournaments, or something...

True, and as SS57 said earlier, they can't really afford to let him run his contract down.

Hopefully we have progressed far enough with the contract details for it to be too difficult for him to go to another club.

I just keep getting visions of Arsenal appearing out of nowhere to gazump us like they did with Arshavin. If that happens, I wager Fazza will spontaneously combust.

well said conductor! i have actually stated this in the spurs vitalfootball forum as well. it is imperative that we consolidate our 4th position or maybe push higher. if we get to the next stages of CL football, fabiano can play. Or he will be spearheading our EPL charge.

On COYS. He got a pretty savage put-down from one of the mods a few days ago and I don't think he's been around since. Can't say I blame him either.

He's been back since then (though having seen Ever's mod-smash, I'm surprised!). Making some great contributions to the 'picture the poster' thread.

Doubt he'll be around here for long though.

I heard that Bayern are in for him.

Can Fabiano not just wait 3 or 4 months and then start talking freely to other clubs anyway in Jan - last 6 months of his contract etc?

If so, then Sevilla get absolutely nothing and Fabiano can sign for someone on a nice contract with a phat signing on fee thrown in. He won't lose out. Probably come our ahead that way.

Squeeze the bastards, Daniel.

Even so, please let us have a fall back option because improving our strikers is vital if we're to challenge for another top 4 place.

It looks like this is the very issue. Levy trying to convince Fabiano to sign, whilst trying to convince Sevilla that KJH is a ready and willing alternative.

I think Sevilla know they have to sell him, but are (quite reasonably in my opinion) trying to get as much money as possible.

Fortunately (and fingers, toes and testicles crossed) it looks like they realise this and will cave in soon.

Otherwise expect Rasiak on loan (with no option to buy :-|).
