Just can't help but think Hugo signing a new contract was told our transfer plans specifically in that we were going for two of his fellow countrymen in Schneiderlin and Griezmann.

I know, I know, optimistic.

Would rather we ran at a loss and eventually went bankrupt ? Nothing wrong with breaking even or even making a profit. What matters is who we buy and how talented they are.

Naughton gets a lot of stick but he's decent backup for RB. Don't want to see him at lb again though.
True he probably gets more stick than is warranted, but from what I've seen I'd like to give Fredericks some first team exposure, so if any offer came in id like us to seriously consider it. Naughton just feels like he always has an error in his game somewhere

Lloris,
Walker, Kaboul/NewCB, Vertonghen, Davies,
Schneiderlin, Paulinho (or any other CM)
Lamela, Eriksen, Greizzman
Soldado/Ade

This line up would definitely give me the confidence that we could have a decent season;
Paulinho in this is just a place holder - If he can perform like he did at Confeds he could be a great value to us...

Long way to go this window...Lets hope we iron out the XI and be ready start of the season.

A high line is a must if you are going to use aggressive and high pressing like Pochettino likes to do, you need to squeeze the midfield and reduce the space. It's just about doing it right and having the right players for it.

Yeah but it still doesn't make it a good option in the PL where pacy little attackers used to playing the counter can run past high defences into space and equally unless you have real quality creative players you actually condense play in the area you need as much space and time as you can to carve openings. There's one thing adjusting the defensive line as you move forward and back as the game flows quite another playing a pretty static high defensive line
I'm certainly no fan of it and even those past masters of it at Barca are more and more finding team have adjusted their tactics to deal with it
Basically it's a dangerous game to play even with best suited players and I think we are a long way off having the best suited players to fit a high line

Are we actually being linked with Vlaar?

If so I think that would be highly underwhelming. Despite a decent World Cup I think Villa is around his level in a bottom half PL side. Villa have been pretty poor for about 3-4 years and he seems to have made no difference to that from what I've seen

Don't doubt that for a minute, as you say we haven't got the players to play a high line effectively.

I don't think I can take another season with a defensive high line....

It's true that Vlaar would be underwhelming but I can't say that I wouldn't take him over Dawson or even this seemingly lesser version of Kaboul that we now have. Given the potential price and the sparsity of viable cb options out there atm I'd be content with him as a short term solution.

With Lovren and Moreno (and even Lascelles) probably out of the reckoning I'm really struggling to figure out who we might go for at cb. We have to go for someone...right? Where's the smoke?

As others have said, why the fuck are people talking about Vlaar? We haven't even been linked to him by FootballDirectNews

God, I hope so. We were an absolute shower of shit at centre-back last season, and it was painful watching Lloris left high and dry time and time again. What a waste of one of the best keepers in the world. We remain an injury to Vertonghen away from catastrophe.
