They have been in financial trouble the past few years. They actually didn't spend that much in the transfer window. Metzelder and Raul, while massive mistakes (I remember being told that I was stupid for saying Raul would be a bad signing for us) only cost them wages. Their two big signings: Hutelaar and Jurado, were offset by the sales of Westermann and Rafinha. So they only had an outlay of 10 million Euros, which was paid by UCL money.

Even those were panic buys after a bad start. So now that they look unlikely to return to UCL next year and Neuer looks unlikely to be bought on a big transfer by Bayern they are probably starting to worry about next year's bottom line.
