It's all been said before, but what do you do?

We seem to have no batsmen coming through the counties with any grit, sound technique/temperament as to what they can/cant do, and knuckle down and bat long periods of time. There are one or two pace options on the cusp, but in general a load of samey medium-fast bowlers who will do ok in England, but elsewhere..., and the less said about our spin options, the better.

Out of the current line up, I'd say:

Jennings - Had too many chances, with the amount he has had by law of averages he will at some point get a score but that's no reason to keep faith in him. Hasn't scored consistently.

Buttler - Still don't think he should be in this team and two or three cameos doesn't make a test player. Concentrate on white ball cricket.

Moeen - Is a one day player/bowler.

Rashid - Ditto.

And then the likes of Burns (running out of chances to impress), and Bairstow (should be an automatic pick, but his test batting consistency in my opinion has gone downhill in the last couple of years, coincidently since he got back in the white ball teams....) have to be questioned at some point.

Silly team selections like this match are just the icing on the cake. They've got to look at some point as to what is coming through the systems.

Luckily, basically every other test team is as mediocre as we are. Which keeps us competitive and results semi-respectable. You could well foresee the Windies collapsing for the last two tests (this one isn't even done yet, I guess......), England skittle them and all will be declared well again. Fuck that. From a quality perspective, I'm fast finding test cricket unwatchable.

Harsh :D

If the stats I've seen are correct, since his recall he's averaging 70-odd with the bat with 5 fifties and a century in something like ten games. That's a bit better than a few cameos, IMO he's probably been one of the more consistent batsmen in the team.

That's better than I was thinking to be fair, though I was under the impression his innings have been rearguard efforts with the lower order(?).

In general though I'm still not sold on him yet, especially as a specialist batsman instead of keeping, and I'm someone who thinks red and white ball cricket should be kept as separate as possible.

I think the fact that clubs and governing bodies favour the money making shorter formats has impacted this. If you're a young batsman why focus on developing into a Test batsman when you can make a fortune in the IPL, BBL, the Hundred, etc.?

Just been getting the random updates on my phone - is this match being played in a fucking car park or on a beach? What the hell's going on? Is everyone drunk?

Both sides have realised if they get the match done within three days then they get two days off in Barbados.

oooooh :D

It's not Curran's fault and it surprises me that you saw what I said as 'having a go'. I stand by what I said, the selection is the issue here. If you're going to pick a bowler in front of someone with 400+ test wickets he should be a 'proper' front line strike bowler and not someone who the experts widely see as a future 'change' bowler with batting as his main forte. Personally I'd have not played two spinners and played Curran instead of either one.

I wasn't posting in reply to you, A&C, just to the general drift that Curran shouldn't have been picked.

Very true, Haseeb Hameed was looking great but he tried to play a more expansive game and seems to have wrecked his batting.

Been out all day came in late and watched the Spurs game from recording ... gutted! Then turned to the cricket and yes the day is good once again as my boys gave England the sought of day that used to be commonplace. Nice to see four quick bowlers on for once a Caribbean wicket that was not flat

A good day yesterday for Spurs fans who follow the cricket :D

At least Spurs showed a wee bit of grit. Our batting last season had about as much backbone as that yesterday.

I don't know much about Keaton Jennings , he keeps getting out to the same nut. How long before either he works out a tactic or gets the boot? An Opener with an aversion to fast bowling! Who'd have thought.

Was something yesterday that there had only been one opener in the last x years who had played more tests with a lower average against seam bowling and he was a Bangladeshi. Says it all. Options are limited at the top of the order, hence Bairstow at 3.

Can laugh at the media types saying that a wrong team selection of bowlers was responsible for being 77ao.
