Kerchhoff at Sunderland might be a shrewd signing. He's done well since his awful debut against us as a midfielder but, like Dier, started life at centre back. He's a good passer and after three years of Guardiola will be no stranger to the high press.

OK fair enough, i thought he'd played more at CB than that.

Just read up on this and it seems his move to RB was more to do with Dortmund's lack of options in that area than anything else.
Dier's move to DM was also for the same reason surely?

BUT the whole point of this discussion (which you clearly haven't been following) is:

- Dier has to be considered as a DM after this season. In fact Dier at DM and Toby at CB are the only two defensive changes in our team that have turned us from one of the worst defensive teams in the league to one of the best.

Why should Dier only be considered a DM when he's a CB by trade and has been used as a CB at times this season?

Actually those two defensive changes aren't the sole reason we now have the best defense in the league, we are now pressing better as a team and committing more fouls higher up the pitch as well which breaks up our opponents transitions. We played Dier at CB and Bentaleb as a DMF against Leicester and we got a clean sheet.

-Cameron Carter Vickers is IMO too young to be playing at the top level. To think that in a 50+ game season that includes CL and a much more competitive PL that we won't need to rotate out Toby for 10-15 games is naive. That's assuming he doesn't get injured.

Sigh you really are hard work, when are you going to stop this fallacy about an extra 10 to 15 games a season?

Toby Alderwereld has already played 43 games this season, that's 32 Premier League games and every Europa League match (10 games), he's played 1 game in the cup and that was Leicester at home. The only games he's missed were the CO cup match against Arsenal, the Leicester replay and the Colchester and Palace matches so he's missed 4 games in total this season, not 10-15, 4! Now replace those EL matches with CL matches and you'll see no difference in terms of how many games he'll play, in fact it's slightly less because you play 2 more matches in the EL anyway.

Is it really hard to imagine that CCV may come in for the odd cup match? You can imagine if we got weaker opponents like when we faced Colchester he'd play, that's the whole point of putting young players in the team so you can bead them in and get them used to the playing style and the ethos of what the manager wants.

Also you keep talking about this injury that Alderweireld will supposedly pick up, why? Is he injury prone? The only time he hasn't played this season when he's been rested so what is actually suggesting that Toby will be injured. He may pickup a freak injure like Jan but basing our transfer policy of a hypotetical situation is an utterley pathetic way to do business, you might as well say we need adequate replacements who do the same jobs as Alli and Lamela just in case they get injured as well.

For me that means we currently have 3 CBs + CCV who should go out on loan for a season like all 18 years olds who've come through our academy.

Alderweireld
Vertonghen
Wimmer

Whilst these are strong players, an injury to just one of them (like we've had with Jan recently means we will be playing in a highly competitive PL, two domestic cups and CL with two CBs. Seems to be an area where buying, or even loaning, a CB that could cover in that situation a fairly important area for us.

Really we loan out every 18 year old who have come through our academy, must have missed where Bentaleb and Onomah went then?

Not every player needs a loan and not every player is the same. Some players peak before others so it's not totally against the realms of possibility that CCV is probably more ready than people think. I've said this before but just in case you ignore it again Poch already shipped Fazio out on loan and kept CCV around, what is that telling you?

Also surprise surprise you didn't respond when I said what will happen when CCV comes back from this loan that you so desperately want and we have 6 defenders all vying for a first team spot? You really think that will work? What's your plan for the following season, how do you plan to keep all these players happy?

You carry on ignoring facts though...

Just to be clear i agree with this, IF Poch et al think that CCV is ready then fair enough, we'll find out in a few months time. But until then (and also he is injured right now), i personally don't think he will be ready for the challenge we have ahead next season.
Oh wow! A team like Dortmund had "a lack of options" at a position.

Bet you never saw that coming.

If Alderweireld were to be suspended/injured/rested, so long as we bring in a top class DM, then we have options without having to add another CB too. Top tier sides, Dier can slot back with the DM coming in. Against lesser sides/cup games, Carter-Vickers or Ball could come in at CB to gain experience.

Yup, this is the point!

I forgot about Dominic Ball as well. :D

i prefer a smaller more fluid squad, it's easy for fans to say let's have 2-3 players per position when they're not the one having to keep them all happy and motivated. i don't think it's sustainable to keep a large squad that covers every possible eventuality, the back-up players soon become disillusioned and without regular football can't perform to anywhere near the same standard as the first choice 11 so you soon end up with calls to replace them and repeat the process all over again. you also block the younger players coming up, it's all well and good saying ship them off on loan for a few years but that doesn't always work and even when it does in the case of a player like pritchard, two very strong seasons elsewhere still counts for less with fans than what one good performance in a spurs shirt would.

Impressed by Kirchhoff at Sunderland. Reads the CDM position quite well and has a great touch for a big man and is Kante esque right now in this game.

IIRC he gifted us a win against them with a comedy display on his debut!

I do support your view, but the smaller the squad is in total number, the larger the most trusted core must be.
Hence why I'm not advocating a 28 player, but a direct increase of 3 players for the most trusted core.

Yes, this is true. They really don't have a RB alternate to Piszczek, who is often hurt. Ginter happens to have a bit of pace, so makes it work. But you're right, this is much more due to need (especially since they're deep at CB) than actually being better there, as CB is very much his position and I think will be moving forward.

Well your "facts" are perhaps not quite as accurate as you might think.

Dortmund:
1. Subotic
2. Hummels
3. Papastathopoulos
4. Ginter - all recognised CBs.

Madrid:
1. Varane
2. Pepe
3. Ramos (being playing CB for 5+ years now)
4. Nacho (mainly a CB but can play on either side too).

Bayern:
1. Benatia
2. Boateng
3. Tasci
4. Badstuber is mainly a CB but again can play across other defensive roles.

Spurs:
1. Toby
2. Jan
3. Wimmer

I would be fully in support of getting in a player whose primary position is CB but can also cover across other positions, no issue for me there at all. BUT to be clear getting in a player whose primary role isn't CB isn't what we should do. Hence my opinion that Dier shouldn't be counted as a CB option - sure he can play there if he really he has to, but he should be our 1st choice DM going into next season.
So you're using lies to try & prove yourself right.. pathetic... as far as finishing a discussion ... we have a saying in our parts ..YOU WOULD'NT FINISH YOUR DINNER .. I'm done debating with you if you can't be honest.. I tried to be civil but your LIES to try & prove yourself right are so disappointing... as a poster on this forum I have no respect for you're views & total disregard for someone who disregards the truth.

Personally I would like Mason as an option further forward he makes great forward runs & if he can improve his finishing definitely has a role to play, I think we should be very careful of removing someone with his fight from the squad.. you might get a more talented player in but would they have his spirit & fight.. Likewise Carrol in the attacking 3 behind the striker he has a squad role, he's clever with his passing & when he passes he's always looking to move into a position to get it back again.. I just wish on occasion where there is a gap to run with the ball into space he would take it because it draws defenders out & opens up give & goes to cut through a backline.

Attacking wise I haven't seen enough of Boufal & have only seen probably 2 full games & he was disappointing however that's only 2 games & they weren't back to back either so it is more than likely they were off-days there must be something about him to have so many clubs interested (heard PSG & Chelsea have already had talks).. I just haven't seen enough to judge.

Gotze is one of my favourite players.. won't happen because of his injury record.. Not played much this season but I think Oliver Torres has everything we need.. From what I've seen of Ousmane Dembele he looks a real talent I'd love to sign him & loan him back for half a season.. that half a season of consecutive games are needed imo.. Sane..Wonderful ability too expensive for us but for his own sake he shouldn't move to a Madrid/Bayern size club yet. Brahimi has everything we need but again to deal with Porto you have to pay a premium.. There's a young Portugese kid at Pacos that I first noticed against Benfica & have seen 3 or 4 times sice, Diogo Jota, nowhere near ready to play in PL but he has all the signs of a future star.

We definitely need a bit more in attack.. I think Acardi at what it would cost for Batshuayi & Lacazetta is the far better striker.. I know he slept with a team-mates wife but he has since married her so it was obviously more than a fling.. he was also made Inter captain so he can't be that bad around team-mates.. his movement & finishing ability is right up their & if one striker along with our Harry has the ability to join the likes of Lewandowski, Aguero & Suarez among the elite of strikers it's him. It won't happen though as I think we will look for someone that can get games out wide too, I'd probably go for Millik or Embola if it was my choice ahead Batshuyai & Lacazzetta (I've mixed feelings on him mainly down to his body language.. not totally convinced)
Icardi also got his team mates kids tattooed on his arm, and his team mate (before Icardi hooked up with his wife) took Icardi in and mentored him, so lets not underplay it. Also Ade, John Terry and Joey Barton have all been captains, so lets not pretend that means anything.

Of course not & if a friend of mine done it to me I'd go through him for a short-cut.. The thing is do we really know what happens in a relationship.. for them to end up getting married there must be something there..I can understand why people wouldn't want him & respect their views on that.. I used to share that view.

I have changed my opinion on him since he took the armband for Inter.. he was always a talented player now he has the work-rate & team ethic.. it's hard to explain accurately however I can see the camaraderie he has with his team-mates.. He won't be joining us anyway.. that doesn't take away from the fact he is a really top striker & as in rating strikers he is miles ahead of Batshuyai & Lacazzeta .

I won't say your wrong because you could be very right & I had the same opinion up until this season.. the only thing I will say is do we really know what happens behind closed doors in a relationship & I don't think you marry someone if there is not genuine love there,, Was how he acted wrong .. of course it was.. There are plenty of us that have done the wrong thing when we are young.. we also learn from our mistakes or try to make up for them.. As much as Icardi is painted as the bad guy she should have equal blame.. I do think they fell for each other & they just went about it all wrong..

I wholeheartedly respect your opinion on tis.. Judging him as a player only.. he is a top top striker
