Nuno (and Paratici) is going to destroy Scarlett if he keeps treating him this way. Against Mura he received no service whatsoever and was hooked. Tonight, again, he’s received no service and was hooked for a midfielder. He clearly isn’t ready to be leading the line for a second string XI. Eventually he’ll start questioning if he’s good enough when he’s still ridiculously young.
It’s a bit arrogant of the club to treat him this way, as in we made a Harry Kane, so we can make another one in Scarlett. He would be better off being given more minutes in a team that is playing better and full of confidence rather than with a load of misfits fighting for their positions within the club.

We at times this season have been crying out for an attacking midfielder, so surely it would just make sense to drop Harry Kane back into AM later on in matches and put Scarlett up top allowing him to benefit from having the more intelligent creative footballers Kane and Son around him,

I think Scarlett has been a bit of a token after Madueke. They didn’t want to lose him so probably made some promises before he signed pro. It also serves as a marker for talented 14/15 yr olds we have. You to could be in senior squad in 2 years look at Dane.

I don't mind starting him but he needs service, its actually painful to watch him play with no service

That said kicking long balls to Markanday, is the most dumbest thing I have seen in my life lol

Sorry, I don't believe it is a case of Scarlett not getting the service in these two Europa Conference games. To me it looks like he's not finding the right positions, at all....

Gil played a few great passes into spaces yesterday that Scarlett should have been in.

I've been watching youth football for about 15 years now, and I've posted on here previously (under a different username) about players who I think have got it and those that haven't. I looked back recently and my strike rate is pretty good...

Sad to say this, but I don't think Scarlett is going to cut it with us. I'm basing this off much less information than I usually have on a player because I typically like to see them at least a few times. But, Scarlett's movement and positioning just isn't very good.

He's young, and will develop, but positioning is one of the hardest things to teach to a striker. They almost need it instinctively because it's almost impossible to learn from being told

I truly hope I'm wrong by the way!

I think Scarlett is overrated by some on here, sure he might become good and like you I hope so. But I was amazed how many thought it was a good idea he started last night.
I agree there is a problem that we didn't buy a back up striker. But given that we didn't, we needed Kane or Son to start up top last night

If I remember correctly he had a good goal scoring record with the u18s and u23s last year. What would you say that was down to because I’d imagine his positioning would have been up to scratch or is the service that good ?
I’m interested to know what you think of our current next crop of u18s / u23swho could potentially play for us?

i don't think people picking scarlett to start means they overrate him, more that they(just like the coaching staff it seems) don't value the competition that highly and scarlett is simply the next striker in line. ok you could say markanday but clearly scarlett is ahead in the club's thinking currently and most wouldn't have seen markanday play until last night.

personally i have no opinion on scarlett and anyone with a strong view on him(either good or bad) is simply speculating. even as a youth nerd i've seen so little of him due to the covid situation and i hardly think it's fair to make definitive statements about a 17 year old's future off the back of a few ad-hoc games in the first team. my only view on him is that he should be playing a lot more for the u23s. john and devine are developing nicely from playing regularly so i don't see why scarlett should be treated differently.

Good points, I think a lot of the people selecting Scarlett don't rate this competition
I do, so there's a big difference in the way I see it. For me Scarlett shouldn't have started
He may make it at Spurs, and of course I hope he does
But for me last night was too big a game for him to have started

To respond to the two posts

@Blake Griffin - yes there's an element of speculation in my post, but there are tell-tale signs for me. I hope he proves me wrong

@Swalien - what you achieve in youth football and what you 'do' are very different. For example, Reo Griffiths scored a lot despite his clear technical deficiencies. Scarlett found space more easily in youth football as the defenders he was playing against were less tactically astute. Playing against better quality men has proven, at the moment, that he's not good at finding those runs/ spaces

I have no strong opinions on any of the other youths besides markanday who I've seen a number of times a couple of years ago. Great feet, very similar to Edwards... could be an exciting player, but too early to say still

Very much agree. They are going to ruin him if they persist with this. He is playing in a team who don’t appear to be interested , no support and he was just getting whacked by their centre halves.

I think to judge any of our youngsters when thrown into that aimless, directionless set-up is harsh in the extreme. Dane had no service and no support. Would Son have been able to conjure up anything on Thursday when he was 17 years old? Doubt it. Dane worked hard and ran the channels but the rest of the team were either playing negative, sideways passing football or lumping it for Dane to scrap for. Its the sign of a very poor manager when he has one idea which only works when he has his best players available. I was not best pleased about more than the result on Thursday. Nuno is very much running out of thin ice with me.

In relation to Scarlett, Kane looked pretty naff when he was played in uefa cup games as part of second string when he was breaking through...

Hope Markandy gets some more game time as well.

I want him to stay and sign, but overload of suitors looking actively at him, and Bundesliga interestingly enough. I find it ridiculously strange he hasn’t even had even five minutes first team action.
This is such a shame, but would be good for him to get opporutnities unless we really start now
I haven’t seen @IGSpur here for a while, I miss his input?
Appreciate it. Just been busy really. Still following the youth football a lot but broke the habit of posting on here, when it got all toxic and haven't picked it back up.
Competing for CL? A quick look shows that both PSV and Bologna are in Europa League that's a tier up on the ECL.
When next will we be in the CL. Here's a guess from me, PSV will be in the CL again before we are.
And why are paying 30m plus for Clarke and Sessengnon, when youngsters seemingly as good as them are being given away for virtually nothing.
See this was a massive bug bear of mine and at the time people got critical. I had said Edwards was a considerably better player than Clarke, at the time. If I remember correctly peopel like coys200 seemed to think it was a ridiculous statement as Clarke was a regular in the Championship and Edwards wasn't getting chances here, which shows that value of actually watching players, and not just making an assumption on their ability due to the level they happened to have come through.

It was clear who the more talented player is, yet we waste money on Clarke, who may have some talent but wasn't on the level we were producing, and what makes it worse is that we would then try and priotise his development in getting good loans and youth team chances when we could have worked on our own. I've never understood that.

Similarly, Sessegnon. I always said if Sessegnon came through our academy I would have played him in the first team, but he was another that came through at Championship level and his performances masked his ability. People genuinely thought we should pay 50m at the time for him which was baffling. I get that you need to invest in youngsters but these should be significantly better than what we had in that position, and we had Tsouroulla, Brown and Cirkin. Now things haven't worked out for them at the moment for various reasons, but as youth LBs Sessegnon was not worth 25m when we could've invested in trying to develop one of those, and put that money aside for someone else or another transfer. I don't know why people thought he was a winger either, and people claimed he was the best 17yo winger in the world when he wasn't event the best in his country. It was such a weird time. As we still have him, I think we should maybe try to work on him, I haven't had the opportunity to watch the u18s this year, but I don't think we have a LB of the 3 I mentioned above nor Sessegnon in the academy at the moment, and he was still a very highly rated LB in his age group, so if we could get a tune out of him we could still have a very good player for us on our hands.

Anyway the thing that drew me back, most likely temporarily, was seeing Markanday get his debut for the first team. His development into a striker has been incredible. As some of you know I was going on about him from his u16 days and would wax lyrical about him. I was actually annoyed that we almost missed out on him joining our academy due to the nepotism of including Poch jr, Statham and Tainio, as I can't see any other reason they would've been selected ahead of him.

He has consistently been one of the most intelligent, trickiest and technically gifted players over the last few years and I feared he would never really do it for us due to his size, and him being too nice. He was always overlooked. But since his growth his conversion into a striker has been brilliant. He is still putting his footwork to good use, his craft and now he is showing his composure. While I really like Scarlett I would like to see Markanday get some opportunities as he offers something different as a striker, and realistically if we could get him through it would be a great money spinner with the Indian fans. It is a great achievement by the club and himself to get an Indian player in our first team, and one who absolutely deserves to be there on merit. Seeing his journey has been incredible and if there is a player I'd love to make it for us it would be him. Would be sad to see him go, if there are contract disputes and I'd wish him well regardless.

@Lilywhite Rose Welcome to the thread. Glad to have you hear. I've met one of you a couple of times at some of the old youth matches. I think it was the QPR game where we came up with the Reo song.
