This was a good game, both teams looked good when going forward and weak defensively. Both sides wasted a lot of good chances. It felt like we created more chances in this game than all the other games put together, obviously not true but you know what i mean. I thought we did well in both halfs, especially when going forward.

This season is all about damage limitation now and try to see if we can improve the confidence of some of the players. We just dont have the players due to injuries to play a different way and start producing exciting performances.

Interesting. Definitely not how I saw it. It was a long ball and he had time and enough pace to get directly goal side. But he seemed to show him that left channel and never get in the way. If Rashford cuts back inside and spanks it in, or rides the block/challenge on the outside left to spank it in, then you say fair enough. But he wasn't challenged and didn't even have his path to goal blocked.
He was delaying rashford, so as not to be beaten 1 vs 1 support player should have been flying in behind

Meh he certainly didnt cover himself in glory, he should have done better but my point is an organised defense doesnt even let such a thing emerge. We were attacking we left the left flank totally open when the ball was kicked long. There shouldnt have been that much space to play a simple ball overthetop.

We got over enthusiastic and both Porro and Romero were in offensive positions, from open play. Not a set piece where its more understandable. We had two defenders back. Technically fine but they were in the positions you would be in a back three. Probably Dier and Lenglet needed to take the initiative and adjust into a back two. And go into a back three structure. Or Hojbjerg/Skipp could have sensed the danger and covered the position.

When the ball actually reaches Rashford in space you are already talking about a strong avoidable goalscoring chance. Dier isnt good at those situations and you would be frankly an idiot to intentionally set up a team where you are relying Dier on a one on one situation. He shows him to the left channel (generally a good idea takes him away from danger) but allows him to quite easily to essentially pass by him and get a clean sight of goal.

But my point isnt Dier didnt do badly. Rather, I think its slightly harsh because Dier isnt the principle reason the goal was conceded. He was put in a difficult position because of a collective failure. Its this that is the main cause of our problems for some time. A failure to function as a unit, as a collective organ.

He didn't delay him though. Rashford went unimpeded towards goal with nobody getting directly goal side. An actual tackle or defensive position between the ball and goal might have delayed him.

As usual for midweek matches I don’t get to see the game til late in the evening here.
If I’d watched it live this would have been my comments at half time.

when ManU are in our final third the man on the ball has runners and men in space in front of him whereas when we’re in their final third the man in the ball has no movement in front of him so the ball goes backwards or sideways every time.
Individuals: Richarlison-offside time and time again, falls over far too much.
Son static; twice crosses come in across the 6 yard box from first Perisic, then Kane and Son makes no move towards the goal/ball.
Dier: 4 or 5 times he came charging out from the center of the defense to intercept or make a tackle, didn’t get near the ball once but left a huge hole in the middle of the defense!! As for the second goal; you’re a defender get a tackle in, he actually moves away from Rashford instead of to him. In fairness to him he wouldn’t have been in that position if not for Hojbjerg pathetically being dispossessed when we were attacking them.

Second half: fair dos to Mason he must have given them a talking to at half time as they were much better and positive. If we’d have played like that from the start, or even for the last few games we’d have won this game and maybe got more out of the other games.
I thought Perisic was very good in that second half putting their defense under pressure and getting crosses in. I was somewhat surprised he was taken off.

In the end we should have won that. Bad miss from Son and then Dier(!!!) Easier to score than miss.
That though is the story of our season. Individual mistakes whether in defense or in attack have cost us so many points this season.
Only 5 more games to endure now.
Get a decent manager in and there is the nucleus of a good team there. Only though if we rebuild from the back then down the spine. GK, CB and AM essential.

We can all still see the glaring deficiencies in the individuals and our team play, but there were some encouraging signs from open play for a change.
I hope that gives Mason and the team a bit of confidence for the last few games.
Don't give Levy any good ideas for the new season... he might go for the cheapest new manager-option 😁 ... but yes, confidence is okay.

You cant approach games like that. If you have a team on the ropes, which we did that half, then you finish them off. You're far more likely to concede dropping deep and letting them play around the edge of your goal area.
Hopefully that'll come.
And dropping deep when you can't defend is not good as well :)

We were lucky game wasn’t out of sight by HT and 3-1 when fernades hit the bar instead of scoring which seemed easier. Play same way against Liverpool and go 2-0 behind and we def won’t come back at anfield with their support. Will get battered if we start the same way

Quite a few good and fair points in here about us from last night (and referring to bits of our season in comparison)

I enjoyed seeing Romero play as the 'roaming destroying centre half' role in that second half
Same, when he gives a shit he’s absolutely quality. So many times this season in second halves him and Benta took it upon themselves to drag us back into games

First half yesterday was a lil strange. It's the first time I felt the WBs and wide forwards were actually working as a unit all season. They all looked to try and break quick and get the ball up the pitch. It's why we managed to get behind so many times but just had no options. The midfield (Inc Kane) and centre backs just seemed not to remember to push up which created the huge spaces between our midfield and defence that United sliced through.

Second half, everyone worked better together and we were starting to get up the pitch better, and you could see the difference. We could have easily got 4 or 5 goals.

I'm not going to rate any player negatively because that was a team effort and it's tough after having to sit back for so many years to all of a sudden change that mindset. First half was that transition in mindset.

You can see the attack felt more like themselves. Richy was excellent first half, he was the one that was unsettling the United defence. We have two attackers with zero confidence right now and they were both putting themselves into dangerous spaces to get a goal. They should have had more goals but if you get into the positions, you will get more chances and the goals will come.

If we played like that all season, we wouldn't be in the mess we are. We are always going to concede goals, all teams are, but you have to be attack minded to make the other team not go all out attack.
