Spurs not ambitious enough for frustrated Mourinho

Jose Mourinho criticised his Tottenham team for failing to show any ambition to build on their early lead in the 1-1 draw against Wolves. Spurs went in front through Tanguy Ndombele after just 57 seconds but then, just as they did at Crystal Palace a fortnight ago, retreated en masse and could not see the game out.

Surely Mourinho doesnt believe that yet another game we do this and that it is how the players are choosing to play?

We took off our best player in the match and one of our most attacking threats (son and Tanguy) at one nil With a good 20 or so minutes to play... what do you expect???

Not understanding this at all.
He keeps saying this but surely the players at least think they are playing to instructions?
But to be fair once again we have been undone by either a corner or a free kick swung in. I cant even blame Dire this time.
Time to earn your inflated salary Jose.

Regardless of what Jose may or may not be telling the players at half time, he has to understand that his actions and in particular his subs are what led to us dropping points yesteday.

He takes off Reguilon for Bergwijn, giving Traore free reign to run full pelt at Davies at every opportunity. This means we lose control of our left side.
He takes off Ndombele for Sissoko, sacrificing any semblence of midfield creativity.
He takes off Son for Lamela, sacrificing any potential directness in behind on the counter.

All of these subs were bad decisions that led to us dropping deeper and deeper instead of regaining a foothold.

When he's been sending them out to defend at all costs, and first and foremost keep teams out for so long, it's pretty understandable if it has pervaded their being's and is now in their mentality (even if Mourinho isn't sending them out with this message any longer)

So often now we see defenders who should know better, not looking for a pass and just clearing their lines or simple headers under little pressure that are back into the mix rather than to one of our players.

At least yesterday there was an effort to move up the pitch when we cleared the ball (something that hasn't been evident in the last few games)

Still the balance is far too heavily weighted towards defence though.

One shot in the second half - that was Dier’s free kick.
No shot on target after the 21st minute.

Absolutely lacking ambition. Desperate stuff

That game plan is fine vs City or Liverpool but surrendering possession like this against Palace and an out of form Wolves side that conceded after 50 seconds is dreadful all round

Jose, much as I have supported him, cannot hide behind the players on this one. He selected the team. He put Reguilon in front of Davies because of Davies's lack of pace. He subbed Reguilon instead of Davies. He put Son on the right, where he never plays well. He took off Ndombele, who had played well, and put on a defensive midfielder in his place. He must shoulder the blame for this and he needs to put it right. And he needs to put it right immediately.

We have two world class players and some other very good ones, which makes this turgid display unacceptable.

I do think that there is an element of some players forcing play when it doesn't need to be that is an issue here.

Winks, Hojbjerg, Sanchez and Dier were all guilty of trying to play balls into the box or down the channels that we were never favourites to win, which weren't required. The aftermath would be a turn over in possession to a team that were patient in their buildup and long parts of the game sat deep.

Jose does need to take a lot of the blame here and I do think the subs played a part although I don't think Bergwijn for Reguilon was an issue. However the way we hand over possession so frequently isn't just on the coach. Also we can't retain possession from a throw in, which is really, really poor.

The way the team is set up doesn't really allow us to be ambitious & until we start to set up differently, maybe a 4-3-3, then I think we'll find it difficult to get back to where we were even a few weeks ago.

This absolutely

Mourinho as a manager has no courage. He admits he has no style, no philosophy, turns his nose up at any idea that football can be entertaining let alone be ‘beautiful’. He is a blot on the landscape of the footballing world. He is an insult to my team.

But this is typical of the man and no different to what he has done elsewhere.

melt him go to PSG and let’s get Poch back ... heck he’s still on the payroll

I think you must have forgotten just how poor we were the last year under Poch. I love the Poch, and one day, once he has some experience under his belt I would love him to come back. Coming back now would be disastrous!

He isn't going anywhere clearly but if the type of game plan that he has in mind isn't getting across to the players then he has to take responsibility for that, either by adapting it or being clearer about what he wants. It would be interesting to know how much influence Sacramento is having - whether he is working with Jose's tactics or whether Jose is taking ideas from him.

He won't be coming back at this point. I thought that we'd moved on from that.

I initially found his interviews interesting and refreshing. However, now i just roll my eyes when he talks.
