I'm in Istanbul having watched the UEFA Cup final.
In the match programme as this was the last UEFA Cup season they produced a table showing all time UEFA Cup records.
Inter Milan were 1st
Spurs were 8th and the top English team.
The next highest were Liverpool (despite 3 wins) in 20th place.
the only other English teams to feature in top 60 were Barcodes at 34 and Ipswich at 54. Our full record was:
Played 86 won 51 Drawn 20 Lost 15 Goals for 182 Goals against 71
Our Goal difference of +111 was 2nd best (To Juventus)
If we had tried harder this year and actually won the Cup we could have been 2nd.
Aren't Statistics lovely !

With a Cup Final and crucial relegation battles coming up we didn't have many options but to field weakened sides against Shakhtar but it goes to show where we should be... competing well and winning in Europe.

Cups, and especially European cups, are an area where we still retain bragging rights over l'arse. We should have been there.

Shakhtar looked very poor in the home leg of our tie against them, true they had a lead to defend but our weakened team really played them off the park and should have got through on the night.

To see them get to the final and win the cup makes me think that they too must have been very much out of sorts when they played us and had alot more to offer then they showed that night (and over both legs really)

But are we top because the 'big 4' have been in the Champions League recently and so haven't played in the UEFA cup?

The first three years of the UEFA Cup...

1972. Winners
1973. Semi-final
1974. Runners-Up

and of course 1984 winners.

Or we could have won the UEFA this season if 'arry hadn't panicked?

Sorry but I hate that attitude. Harry was brought in with a mission statement to try and guarantee our Premiership status. He did so and then some. Injuries, fixture conjestion and poor initial Euro player registration hindered his team choice at the time so please, don't write such daft ill informed throw away comments
