Just watching 8 out of 10 cats do countdown and David Baddeil is one of the guests.

Two people mentioned not using the word "porked" so as not to offend the proud defender of the Jew*

His reply was "Oh come on I'm not that Jewish"

I'd love to hear him explain that one.

*May or not have been proclaimed by Mr Baddeil in his anti Spurs rants.

Where's the controversy? Is he not Jewish?

I think what the op is saying, is that we need to see a birth certificate.

I'd probably use a different set of words, but I've expressed the same sentiment countless times, usually when itchy/twitchy Gentiles, trying to bend over backwards not to appear anti-semitic and uncomfortable, make total arses of themselves by making clumsy 'ha-ha' comments about not eating pork. People who don't understand the difference between religious observance and ethnicity. People who, basically, don't know any Jews and cannot prevent themselves from broadcasting their acute discomfort with anyone of an ethnicity that is not the same as their own.

These kinds of comments are the direct equivalent of itchy/twitchy white people, who feel totally uncomfortable in the presence of black people, making cringeworthy comments about 'liking reggae' and 'having had a black friend at school'.

I understand perfectly where Baddiel is coming from here. The whole encounter was predicated on subtle anti-semitism.

I'm as Jewish as you can be and still be an atheist, but I can easily imagine a situation where I'd say 'I'm not that Jewish', not because it's true, but because it is the best option, when confronted with a racist fuckwit.

I think what most of you have missed is that Baddiel is a fucking hypocrite.
When he wants to have a dig at spurs he's very very Jewish and the word yid is worse than ****.
But when he's getting paid he's "not that Jewish"

I just think there's something a little bit childish about all the hate. This perception that he hates Spurs which is the only reason he campaigned against the use of the word yid is, I suspect, untrue. And so what if he does hate Spurs? Why care? We hate Chelsea. The level of offence that people seem to take is like the guy has punched our kids in the face.

Isn't it more that he doesn't seem to have much of an issue with his own club, Chelsea, who drag one of the most anti-semitic supports around with them?

I think he's confused about the situation and embarrassed by the football team he supports. By somehow getting the Yid word to be as taboo as the N word it will somehow make his life much easier watching games against Tottenham

This doesn't stack up for me, the racist scum will always chant and hiss and make reference to concentration camps and I'm glad that the word has been pretty much reclaimed by those it was meant to offend

It's definitely a tricky one, Bediel has his arguments and reasons. I just don't agree with him but maybe that's because I'm a lifelong Tottenham supporter...

"Oh come on, I am not that Jewish" You either are or are not, there is no in between. This tells me that he uses his position and beliefs to suit whatever agenda is the flavour of the day. A hypocrite in other words.

At the time when the row was raging I couldn't seperate his comment "You're inviting racism by calling yourself Yids" from "She was asking to get raped by wearing a short skirt", never mind all the historic reasons behind Spurs fans use of the word. He never satisfactorily cleared it up for me as to whether Chelsea fans would stop their chants if Spurs fans stopped using the word Yid as a gesture of togetherness either. I suspect not.

As others have intimated, he seems to be a careerist and an opportunist when it comes to his faith, opting in and out of it or playing on it as the situation demands, he has also confirmed that the signature below is genuine but that he felt uncomfortable signing it at the time. More opportunism-he had a book to plug so his strongly held beliefs became negotiable it would seem.
