Emerson Royal could be heading out the door at Tottenham this summer - less than a year after arriving. Spurs are believed to be willing to listen to offers for the Brazilian defender they signed from Barcelona for £26million in August.

It’s his first season here, he’s not played well, but he should be given time to improve.

Does anyone honestly think Royal can do what Doherty has done in the last 2 premier league games in terms of scoring and assisting?

Go back a few months and no one would’ve thought you’d see Doherty play like he has last couple of games.

Doherty is now showing the same form that convinced us to buy him from Wolves. Go ahead and pull up footage of Emerson Royal at Betis and share with us any footage that indicates Royal can do what Doherty has done these past 2 league games. I'll wait.

In my opinion we still need a quality right (wing) back. No matter what... I don't trust any of the them. And two good games from Doherty is far from enough... we can't take the risk next season with just Emerson and Doherty... we need players of a higher consistency. Even if they have a dip in form they still have to be solid.

But Matt Doherty is 30 and has been playing in the premiership for the last five years, Royal is 22 and hasn’t played one year here yet, it’s an unfair comparison.

If he goes it'll probably be a loan. He'll more likely prove his worth at a stable club that utilise a back four, given a full season. Far better chance we make our money back that way. Tbh in the right system I do genuinely think he'd probably be a very solid RB. The problem is he's just all wrong as a Conte WB.

Royal is not a RWB and I have no doubt that he'd thrive at another club as a RB. The unfair thing is plugging him into a system that doesn't suit his abilities and then hoping he can adjust. Sounds familiar? Look at how Doherty fared when he was deployed as a RB for us. He stunk up the place. Like you said, Doherty is 30 and has years of experience playing as a RWB, why couldn't he have just adjusted to the RB position when Mourinho or Nuno were here? Clearly age isn't the determining factor here.

his lack of qualify going forward (crossing, dribbling, shooting etc.) is not related to the position he plays

Maybe. Doherty was playing in the Championship at the same age and had 2 assists in 33 games.

Royal doesn't fit this system. He needs time that we don't have right now. I'm fine keeping Doh as a backup but we really need a true 1 RWB. With that said, i wouldn't be mad at loaning him to another midtable/bottom prem team to get minutes next year. He is super young and you never know what might happen. Physically he's a good fit for the prem, maybe even somehow make him a RCB in a back 3? IDK but it is so hard to watch that triangle of Lucas/Emerson/Winks it is hell. Also Doc only looked better once we got Kulu/Bentancour on that side right? maybe with that same setup he looks better?
