Would Liverpool actually want to let keane go in terms of squad depth? With big doubts over the fitness of Torres they would be left with kuyt babel and n'gog. Doubt they would have time to find a non cl tied striker. Can't see it happening

Not Levy's fault. Different managers. He has rightly sanctioned those buy-backs because the new manager wants them. Not that a lot of you would mind, but if he says no, Harry would get the hump and end up leaving.

I think i'd like Keane back. There. I've said it. He should return, give a press conference saying all the right things such as having to win back the Spurs fans etc, then score and set up lots of goals in the next 15 or so games, keeping us up.

Yay.

I can just imagine Keanes speech on the website.

"Ive supported spurs since a boy, in fact my blood runs white and blue. I would like to that Levy for helping me fulfil, this, the most beautiful of dreams....." etc

From what I understand from a Liverpool fan who haunts their forums is that Rafa wanted Barry in the summer but the board, headed by Parry, were not prepared to sanction it. Rafa may have wanted Keane but when the club splashed out more on a player of similar age and ability he took the hump somewhat. Keane is a pawn in a struggle for dominance at Liverpool that has led to his stop-start appearances and Rafa's refusal to sign a new contract unless he is the main man in transfer dealings.

Considered opinion on their boards is that Rafa will be off to Madrid come the summer.

A little more...from tomorow's Daily Mail.

The Americans, who have been split on several issues, have joined forces to try to secure Benitez's signature. One of the most significant changes on the new deal offered to Benitez is that he will now report to the owners on transfers.

A source said: 'There has been a lot of communication between the owners and Benitez in the past 72 hours. Some changes have been made to the original contract offer and there is a hope that Benitez will agree to it. The idea is for him to be in charge of football matters, and leave Rick Parry to do the commercial side.

'If Manchester United were in the market for two players who cost the same money, the board would let Mr. Ferguson choose which one he needed the most - the same applies for Arsene Wenger and David Moyes. The owners understand Rafa should be given the same deal.'

Keane, a boyhood Liverpool fan, will be distraught at having to leave but has been unhappy at the deeplying role he has been asked to play. Benitez indicated last night that he had not sanctioned paying £20m for Keane, insisting: 'The club spent it.'

He is apparently indifferent as to whether Keane attends today's game, saying: 'It's a day off for the players not in the squad. We don't insist they come to the game.'

Looked at a Liverpool forum where they are fairly scathing about the way Keane has been treated.

Spurs to end Keane's Anfield misery - I didn't even sanction the £20m transfer in the first place, admits angry Benitez

Robbie Keane is on the verge of a £15million return to Tottenham after being ditched by Rafael Benitez for Liverpool's most important game of the season against Chelsea today.
Benitez, who has also won important contract concessions from the club's American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, effectively ended Keane's six-month Anfield career yesterday when he left the mercurial striker out of his squad to face Luiz Felipe Scolari's side.

Liverpool must win today if they are to stay in the race for their first League title since 1990. But the omission of Keane, 28, prompted Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, reeling from the loss of Jermain Defoe for several weeks with a foot injury, to move fast to secure the Irishman as a replacement.

to be honest do we really need him? so when defoe gets back to fitness who will the strike pair be? we know Defoe and keane dont work, and if we go pav and keane what was the point in spending 15m for defoe? unless we play all 3 lol in a 4-3-3?

Wasnt it on many footbal sites that Defoe could be out for 3 months? If we lose Defoe then we still need a striker. Who should we better get then... Keane or someone who still needs to fit in the team.

Its Keano for me _O_!

We still got Bent though, who showed how leathal he is against Bolton.
Our situation havent changed with Defoe's injury, we still need a forward who is capable of playing with either Defoe or Pav (or Bent for that matter).
We need someone with an aerial threat, someoen who can hold up the ball and link with a striker.

I can't wait for his arrival although i can't see it happen, because Liverpool won't accept a losing money on him and Levy would be right not to pay the same £20.3m for him.

i think we are need RK type of player, as Ramos looked for Arshavin and Redknapp tried for Bellamy, but the problem is all of them are 28 and would be expensive, despite we can't expect more than 12-18 good months for all of them to be honest.

btw, we need second striker or even striker after Defoe injury, this shouldn't be a problem for JD or Bent or even Roman, because Keane could do good job on right or left with Harry as are using 4-5-1 formation away from home, and Harry wouldn't mind using Keane behind Defoe as he already used Campbell and Defoe as alone striker with Modric behind one of them.
