I personally think Skipp was MOM today but can we bring back options for Team Effort and None Deserved?

Skipp from what I saw.
Bran was fantastic as well.

Davies did a lot better against Adams than I thought.

Skipp was immense and motm. What a performance. Love Bryan’s toughness, technique, and involvement in the game as well.

Was very happy with what I saw from Skipps - some good interceptions, tackles and some good passing as well - and he is certainly a MOTD candidate - 8.25/10

  • Gollini 6
  • Tanganga 6
  • Romero 5
  • Sanchez 5
  • Davies 5
  • Dele 7
  • Skipp 8
  • Ndombele 4
  • Lo Celso 5
  • Bryan 7
  • Kane 7
  • Son 6
  • Hojbjerg -
  • Reguilon -

Thought Skippy was great can only get better and some very good imagintive passing instead of the sideways stuff.

Skipp.

Defence struggles without Dier. Hope he’s taken a big step this season now he’s the most senior CB.

Skipp and Gil were very good

Skipp should be picked ahead of hojbjerg when there is no need for both

Gils energy levels are exactly what we need

Romero is going to be class

tanganga definately 1st choice RB

put Ndombele further forward where he can’t kill us and no defending responsibilities (inc set peices)

lo celso and dele weak links

miss Lucas

Skipp MOM for me, thought he was immense as our only DM. He was closely followed by Gil who definitely has something about him. Never stopped running and never stopped trying to make something happen. Also made a couple of great tackles on Traore. Not sure if it’s a good thing or bad thing that our two best players were our two youngest players!

Gollini 6
Tanganga 6
Sanchez 6
Romero 6
Davies 7
Skippy 8
Dele 7
GLC 5
Ndombele 6 (the average of 9 and 3)
Bryan 7
Kane 7

Either Skipp or Bryan MoTM for me. Both did really well against Traore as well.

Gollini - couldn't do anything about the goals. Did ok without being tested too much

Tanganga very good but needs to tone the aggression down a notch.
Sanchez - back to last season's Davinson. Was afraid of this.
Romero - Struggled together with Davinson. I think he is partly to blame for the second goal - he should not step up there to try and cut off the pass, he has to drop and try and press Podence and try and cut of the angle for him to curl it around Gollini instead.
Davies - did well apart from his crossing which is just dire

Lo Celso - poor again.
Dele - some great moments such as the assist and some truly awful.
Ndombele - best player on the pitch for 30 mins then pretty much the worst. There must be something more to his lack of fitness, I cannot fathom how unfit a player can be when training every day and playing PL football.
Skipp - has a tendency to start slowly but grew into it as per usual.
Bryan - Combined well, always running and full of energy. Doesn't hide and struck a great pen. Should have scored in normal time though.

Kane - excellent first goal but missed a sitter in the second from a beautiful Son cross. Still not involved enough for my liking.

Subs:
Son - very good cameo.
PEH - poor pen
Reguilon - excellent pen

Nuno - I like that he acknowledges our obvious problems, such as set pieces, which Poch and Jose never did. But why is Tanguy marking the opposition's strongest set piece players? Tanguy was marking Dendoncker yesterday and Lukaku last Sunday - what is the actual thinking behind that? Why do we not have at least one player, like Tanguy for instance, covering one of the posts?

The positive:
- we look good as long as Tanguy isn't gasping for air.
- did create some excellent chances in the second half also this time, even if we lost control of the match.
- winning on pens again

The bad:
- we look much worse as soon as Tanguy tires, which is before the 40 min mark in high-tempo games...
- missing too many easy chances to put a game to bed.

Almost unanimous shouts for Skipp as Man Of The Match, he's massively leading the poll at the top of the page.

Meanwhile, head over to the Arseanal match thread & pretty much everyone is dropping him, the local lad who will absolutely get what a NLD is all about, and they're selecting Lo Celso instead of him.

This place really is fucking weird at times.

Yep was saying just this in another thread . Which fuckwit is arranging for pussy TN to mark critical oppo players at set pieces ? Madness.

Skipp starts NLD no question, for some reason because he plays well for Argentina & did well in France and Spain some are in love with Lo Celso , don't get it.

It's either PEH or Skipp for me, not both at the same time. Too defensive and little creativity with both.

Poch nearly always played with two defensive midfielders, Dembele and either Wanyama or Dier , seemed to work for Poch ,trouble is we have no creative players in midfield, N'dombele can be on his day when he feels like it.

put Ndombele further forward where he can’t kill us and no defending responsibilities (inc set pieces)
The problem with this approach is that Ndombele's key role in the side is to link defence to attack, in the same way that Dembele used to do: by taking the ball in a defensive position and rumbling forward with it 20-25 metres, without being dispossessed, until he can deliver it to an attacking teammate.

In the absence of an Eriksen figure who can kill defences with a creative pass, the consequence of playing Ndombele in the two or three behind Kane is that there is no one to get the ball from the defensive midfielder(s) and link play to the opposition box.

Rather than playing Ndombele where he cannot do damage by losing the ball, it would be better to teach him some bloody judgment, so he gets caught in possession less frequently overall and never when there is no cover. Until he improves his judgment of risk, we'll have to put up with him losing the ball occasionally, because we have no one else who can keep it and move it with such creative effectiveness.

We need to get some confidence. Playing the managers old team away adds pressure and to try and blend players in would have been a disaster. Personally I think he made the right call with the team selection. Rodon and Co can get some time in the Europa Conference.
Mourinho took the view that you play your strongest team at all times. Maybe that was a confidence thing, or a winning something mentality but we'd lose important league games as a result. Often looked tired and made mistakes.

Nuno was saying that he is having to use games as training sessions, due to the schedule. But if he is exploring playing sanchez as LCB against arsenal or Ndom as a deep play maker, then we saw all that last season.
Sanchez is strictly a RCB and NDom creates as many problems as he solves playing him deep.

So everyone missed Dele's fantastic would-be assist for Gil?
And his crazy little pass to Kane in traffic deep inside the box that could also result in a goal in the 2nd half?
That's three goals right there, but for the finishing. For a team with little or no creativity.
The guy cannot get a break here.

Seemingly so.

Because he’sa limited footballers with no technique or vision according to most so to acknowledge three exceptional instances of creativity would go against that particular rhetoric.

And then it just becomes a case of simple risk v reward. Personally I think it was a foul on him anyway yesterday, and the pass back into him was poor, but even then I don’t think Romero or Tanganga covered themselves in glory with where they found themselves at the time of the dispossession.

I don’t think we can accommodate him in a double pivot at this point (sadly, as I’d love to see 4 attackers in front of him) but I do think that in a 3 with the legs of Dele and Højbjerg / Skipp his risk it’s mitigated enough to indulge his ability.

Skipp deserves to start v Arsenal but then I’d also say Højbjerg and Dele do, while Ndombele, frustrating though he is, needs to if we want them to have anything to worry about. Lo Celso doesn’t come into it for me, if he plays it’ll almost definitely be out wide and I have a feeling Gil may just have usurped him.

I didn't manage to see the game, how well did we play? Better than when we played played them in the Premier league?

Much better. We controlled the first half hour and were the better team during the last half hour. We lost control of the match before and after half time. There was plenty of attacking football and we had 50% possession.

I thought he was very watchable.

I'm disappointed we didn't play scarlett, Rodon and some of the youth.
Plus we got to hope Nuno knows what he's doing playing the first team in a minor competition just days before a game that could decide his long term future.
To be honest first team players should be able to play on a Wednesday night then again on a Sunday teatime, particularly when there’s no danger of extra time. If there are injuries then heyho, that’s football.
