I do not know whether to laugh or cry as the result was good but the performance was woeful.

Every team we have played so far bar Man Utd, have had better ball control, better holding the ball, better passing and they seem to tick as unit unlike us I am afraid to say.

I was cursing Jose for taking off Lamela for Bale, but what do I know?! The tactical thing he did which I liked was when he took off Son for Davies to defend our slender lead.

Saying all that, we won 3 points are now in second place with only 2 points behind the leaders, with the best goal difference in the League. If West Ham had known how to protect their lead we would now be on top!

MOTM Undecided until I have had a time to calmly review the match.

Hojbjerg motm by a country mile in my opinion.

Rest of the midfield was, quite frankly, sub standard. A few decent passes off Tanguy and a good run early in the second but otherwise largely anonymous. Not sure if that was where he was played? No comment on the other cm.

Defense was ok.

Son had one of those games he has once in a while but still worked hard.

Great to see Bale on the score sheet.

Our ball retention is quite poor at the moment. For me, the CM still remains the largest issue JM has to solve. It just didn't work today.

Still, wins a win and I'd happily sèe spurs grind out results like that all weird, unpredictable season if it got us up near the top.

Hojbjerg for me. A very important player for us at the moment, glad he didn't go off injured.

Still disagree with the OP because we played good stuff against Newcastle, for large parts of the game against Saints and West Ham and even Burnley was not nice but alright and it was done what we needed. Of course there is room of improvement especially in our offensive play but its not as bad as some point out.

Today was certainly not good, but tbf Brighton havent had big chances we got away with. No they got a piss cheap goal and we hit the post twice when we needed to score again. What we actually did.

Dont want to play like this every weekend but it was just enough.

Lloris - 6 - fumbled one a bit, otherwise not tested too much

Doherty - 4 - offered nothing offensively and looks shaky in defense
Alderweireld - 7 - what a ball for the winning goal. Good game again
Dier - 6 - okay, nearly conceeded another handball in the box
Reguilon - 7 - good energy, had trouble with Lamptey, but great ball for the winner. Should do it more often

Hojbjerg - 7 - solid
Sissoko - 5 - Athlete, not a footballer. Not sure what he brings to the team offensively. His position is so important and needs an upgrade. And its not like he is winning many balls back
Ndombele - 5 - not a good evening. Was lost

Lamela - 6 - Fought well, good shot from outside the box and a lovely move for the first goal, but overall not enough for a starting place week in week out
Son - 5 - wasnt his day
Kane - 6.5 - Not his best game but had a tough job and did well holding up the ball up front in the end

Lo Celso - 6 - alright, needs to play more often to get into it again
Bale - 7 - game winning goals, honestly not much else
Davies - NET

Guess I give MOTM to Pierre

Spot on OP.

Almost every team we play against seem to know how to play football better than us. They play on the ground with nice buildups while we go long, high and hope almost every time. Even weaker teams like brighton and burnley. Its really cracking my head why we cant play more on the ground.

Having said that, we're 2nd despite being outplayed for almost all the matches, so ill take it. But this cannot go on, because better teams will rape us.

Hojbjerg my choice today. Was everywhere.

Son was utterly poor.

Can we please stop to write Holjb(j)erg? I read it everywhere and its just wrong. Thought we could get back of knowing the names of our players after Eriksen left, but these Danes make it hard it seems

Hojbjerg or toby. Worried about Doherty though, although I know an out and out right back isn't his preferred position, and his weaknesses are exposed there. We aren't playing to his strengths, but he should still be doing better.

Win is a win, but pretty worried about Doherty. Get the feeling that he was signed to play RWB, with Davies the other side, but Reguilon has come in a fucked that up.

Really poor in our third and offers little to no ball progression atm. Aurier still the better all-round option for me.

Largely agree with this, especially the Sissoko bit. We really do need another CM who is comfortable on the ball and breaks up play. Sissoko looks shaky every time he has to make a decision. We need more calmness in there.

I thought Sissoko was pretty good, especially first half. We know he has limitations, but he seemed to take more responsibility with the ball tonight.
I voted for Hojbjerg, just because he's better.
Second half didn't really notice, because I was either headbutting the wall or hiding behind the sofa.

Honest question, what has he done with the ball?

Sissoko was good.

I don't understand why people still want to castigate him for his weaknesses we should all know what kind of player he is by now.

Suspect you are right with the RWB opposite Davies role. Reguilon was a super opportunity buy, can't really turn down one of the best full backs in Europe for 30 mil. It's Doherty's lack of pace and 1v1 defending that's exposed, and his elite attacking instincts and disruptive runs into the box that are severely hindered. As an experienced premier league player, I still expect better though. I hope he improves, because he definitely can.
