Juande Ramos has praised the bravery of the players who stepped up to take a penalty in the shoot-out during our heartbreaking UEFA Cup exit at the hands of PSV Eindhoven last night.
We lost the tie 6-5 on spot-kicks having levelled the aggregate scores thanks to Dimitar Berbatov’s 81st minute strike.
But after a dominant display against the Dutch Champions and such a cruel end to our European adventure, our Head Coach is philosophical.
Juande said: “We can have no regrets because we wanted to win the match on the night and we did that. It came down to penalties and if JJ had scored, we’d have gone through. It’s heads or tails.
“Every player who takes a penalty is courageous, so I can only congratulate those players for their courage.
“Everybody is sad because we did everything we could and came so close to going through, but it wasn’t to be.”
Now Juande has challenged his players to pick themselves up for an assault on the top half of the Barclays Premier League for the remainder of this season.
He added: “We still have two months of league football left, so I hope the players can lift themselves back up for these games.
“The players are all professionals and know that they can win or lose, so now we have to just focus on the next game against Manchester City on Sunday.”
:-|
Gomes is a fucking good keeper, and if you can't see that, we need not debate the topic a second longer, coz it'll be a waste of your breath as well as mine.
A bit like your hell bent on Chimbonda being shit.
Did you agree he was MOTM then?
Over the two legs he was no better than Robbo.
If Robbo isn't good enough for us then nether is Gomes.
I'm late to this Gomes debate but I thought I'd add my two cents.
He had a few dodgy moments yest, but most were brought on by a young defence that has constantly been changed and shifted. Gomes commands his box exceptionally well, Robinson could learn many lessons from Gomes's awareness, agility and authority within his box. If he was playing behind top quality defenders he could trust then he would be FURTHER recognised as one of the best goalies in the world. He also has match saving abilities that Robbo lacks.
I'd love it if we went for him, but PSV value you him so highly. He's not old, and goalies do develop better in their mid 30's traditionally, but I think a top team would be more likely to go for him.
Still, for me...I think he's top
