For people blaming JJ and Chimbo read this.

Juande Ramos has praised the bravery of the players who stepped up to take a penalty in the shoot-out during our heartbreaking UEFA Cup exit at the hands of PSV Eindhoven last night.

We lost the tie 6-5 on spot-kicks having levelled the aggregate scores thanks to Dimitar Berbatov’s 81st minute strike.

But after a dominant display against the Dutch Champions and such a cruel end to our European adventure, our Head Coach is philosophical.

Juande said: “We can have no regrets because we wanted to win the match on the night and we did that. It came down to penalties and if JJ had scored, we’d have gone through. It’s heads or tails.

“Every player who takes a penalty is courageous, so I can only congratulate those players for their courage.

“Everybody is sad because we did everything we could and came so close to going through, but it wasn’t to be.”

Now Juande has challenged his players to pick themselves up for an assault on the top half of the Barclays Premier League for the remainder of this season.

He added: “We still have two months of league football left, so I hope the players can lift themselves back up for these games.

“The players are all professionals and know that they can win or lose, so now we have to just focus on the next game against Manchester City on Sunday.”

:-|

Gomes is a fucking good keeper, and if you can't see that, we need not debate the topic a second longer, coz it'll be a waste of your breath as well as mine.

A bit like your hell bent on Chimbonda being shit.

Did you agree he was MOTM then?

Over the two legs he was no better than Robbo.

If Robbo isn't good enough for us then nether is Gomes.

a tremendous performance to win 1-0 at PSV - Berbs goal was another masterpiece - and please no witch hunts against JJ or Chimbo over the pens

remember we won the UEFA cup on pens so we're not all bad when it comes to them :)

Im encouraged by everything I saw last night, we did as good against them as any champions league side I have seen play them. On another day we could have won the game by a more comfortable margin and not required spot kits (imo we deserved to have done so)

The only concern I have now is that we keep Berbatov, last night just further cemented in my mind his vital role to our team, if we were to lose him he would be almost irreplaceable and we would surely have to rebuild from being taken a step or two back.

I think if we do secure him for a longer period and make a couple of key signings to improve the depth and overall quality of our squad...we would easily have a team capable of challanging for the CL postions, just a matter of consistancy, which I feel a slightly improved squad and more time for Ramos to work with the team would bring.

So keeping our best players and adding a little quality are surely our main objectives from here to the start of next season.

Hopefully we can get off to a better start next season and not trip at the starting line and be left playing catch up again.

Im disapointed from last night, but excited for next year.

I'm not hell bent on Chimbonda being shit. Chimbonda's hell bent on Chimbonda being shit. I just call it as I see it

Did I agree Gomes was MOTM? If that's who you're on about, yup. Sky Sports seem to to think he was MOTM. I think he was MOTM. That, especially the latter, is enough for me.

I wasn't comparing him from Robinson, was I? If you want my opinion, I'd take him over Robinson any day.

I don't think Robinson did much wrong over the 2 legs, but I thought Gomes was very good over 2 legs.

I cant believe some people on here are lashing out at jenas and chimbonda for missing the penalities. Proffesional footballer or not anyone who has been in a penalty shoot out will know how unbelievably nerve racking it is and in the end when it comes to penalties the playing field really levels out and its just luck of the draw really. I mean 8 times out of 10 jenas' penalty would have gone in and it would have been seen as a really good penalty. I agree with Ramos and praise everyone who had the courage to step up and take a penalty in the first place

Sitting knackered at work after some w*nker decided it would be funny to pull the Emergency Chord on our 'escape' train from the stadium last night to Amsterdam and delayed the train by over 35 minutes!!

But anyway..... from what I saw last night the boys tried, the tactics almost came off and God damn it I really thought Jenas' pen was in! I dont want to criticise any player for effort last night but I did think that we could have tried to overlap more times from fullback. It appeared many times that Chimbonda got the ball with a bit of space but didnt really try to take on the fullback and at least force a corner.

But we had the chances to win. I cant believe that some people feel its fine to criticise the players last night - but everyone is entitled to their opinion I suppose.

Well done Spurs and keep it up for our remaining games so we overtake the Spammers.....

I'm late to this Gomes debate but I thought I'd add my two cents.

He had a few dodgy moments yest, but most were brought on by a young defence that has constantly been changed and shifted. Gomes commands his box exceptionally well, Robinson could learn many lessons from Gomes's awareness, agility and authority within his box. If he was playing behind top quality defenders he could trust then he would be FURTHER recognised as one of the best goalies in the world. He also has match saving abilities that Robbo lacks.

I'd love it if we went for him, but PSV value you him so highly. He's not old, and goalies do develop better in their mid 30's traditionally, but I think a top team would be more likely to go for him.

Still, for me...I think he's top

Sounds familiar. Can't think why.

He's certainly a whole lot better than the Robbo we've seen for the last season-and-a-half, and I'd say maybe edges Robbo at his best, but there's not a hell of a lot in it. And although PSV do seem to have a habit of selling their best players, I'd say he's one they'd be very loath to let go.

I'd sooner have Robinson over Gomes any day.

In the 2 games in this tie Robinson didn't make a single mistake and kept us in the tie at home with an exceptional save from Farfan.

Gomes on the other hand made mistake after mistake and got lucky so many times it was ridiculous. He flapped and waved at crosses and caused anxiety in his own backline to the point of comedy. Nearly forced an own goal out of his central defender in the first half last night and caused mayhem when chesting down Berbatov's header in the 2nd. he redeemed himself with a spectacular save from malbranque at the end of extra time but overall Robinson was massively the better keeper over the 2 legs!

If it hadn't been for Robbo's saves in the first leg we might as well have emailed in last night's result. I should also have said there's not a hell of a lot in it when it comes to shot-stopping. Some of the strokes Gomes was pulling last night and in the first leg were far more alarming than anything we've seen from Robbo.

It's also not true to say PSV's defence is inexperienced and has been constantly changed. Salcido (who I thought was very good indeed) has played in virtually every game, Kronkamp in the vast majority, and Zonneveld, Marcellis and Alcides in over half. Their coach certainly hasn't had to do the constant fire-fighting and juggling acts that Jol and Ramos have.
