Not a prediction, but what I would do:

Would be my preference.

I don't think Hodgson will be so bold. He's a tediously conservative manager. He'll 'play it safe'. But why play it safe when your 'safe' team won't have the edge against sides that are superior on paper? Take a risk, start some of the younger and more exciting players like Sterling and Barkley. You never know, they may surprise and flummox teams like Italy on their day. We need to gamble, but we won't.

I wanted to put Walker in. He has attributes that Johnson doesn't, and I think on his day he's a better player and offers more. But he's prone to spectacular blunders and that's not what you need in high pressure world cup games.

I don't think playing Gerrard and Carrick is a particularly good idea. One or the other for me, and Gerrard is having a far better season. That being said its probably what Woy will do.

Think Henderson has been excellent this season and the midfield will need some energy.

Think that team has a lovely balance to be fair, certainly what I'd play.

Also that whole midfield I posted gets serious goals...Henderson, Gerrard (not so much since deployed deeper), Ox, Lallana and obviously Rooney.

Come on people, Ox? He's been terrible lately. Lallana and Rodriguez on the wings!

Not how I'd have it but what I predict it'll be. (actually I think he might bulk the midfield for the Italy game but whatever)

Hart;
Walker, Jagielka, Cahill, Baines;
Huddlestone, Gerrard;
Sturridge, Rooney, Lallana;
Carroll/Lambert.

I like the idea of Sturridge, Lallana and Rooney having a big frontman to play off of. Think it will guarantee enough goals that you could have Huddlestone and Gerrard sitting deep and dictating play. Don't think Huddlestone will get on the plane though. Stick Carrick or Henderson in instead.
