But had keane not been playing would Defoe/Bent/Berbs or whoever else been there to miss the open goal? It's a bit like the Dawson deabte. Dawson gets loads of stick for making mistakes, yet we concede more when he doesn't play.

We got 2 or 3 clean sheets in a row without that clown.

Of course. Anything could happen had he scored or the keeper not messed up or whatever. But my point is that it's the same outcome scoring/not scoring and conceding/not conceding. Robbie Keane deserves just as much stick for missing an open goal as Robbo for... one of the goals.

What does it depend on?

Chimbonda can't seem to mark people

Kaboul has just been a disaster from day one

Dawson seems to have gone completely to pieces

Lee can't use his left foot despite being a left back

And as for Robbo I don't think there's any part of his goalkeeping that I'm confident in at the moment.

There's very much a case for us buying a whole new back 5. The only thing it depends on for me is how much money we've got. If it's limited then the centre backs and the defensive midfielder are the priority. If there's lots of money to spend then the other areas should be improved when possible aswell.

It depends on what Ramos thinks he can do with what we've already got. And what he thinks will be a quicker solution to our defensive problems. We could get new defenders in, but it might take them longer to gel and start playing well for us than it would be to stick with what we've got and get them playing well.

Yep spot on...for today.

But surely you have to look at it long term and see that Keane is joint second top scorer in the Premiership this season whereas there is a reasonable argument to suggest Robbo has been the worst keeper in the league and our defence is just above Derby's.

Nobody can argue with you that the strikers should get the same treatment when they mess up as the defence. But we all know (or certainly should) that the strikers are far from the problem at Spurs at the moment.

Yeah I agree with that.

But we also conceded 4 in a home game against a bottom half team. i'm not defending Dawson's form, but if you go through our Prem games this season we have conceded on average less when he plays than when he doesn't. So whilst he hasn't been on form in the least bit this season, thanks to messageboard influence people are convinced he's been far worse (comparitively with our other defenders, not the Prem in general) than he has. He's been a part of a defensive problem as a whole.

Point taken, and I'd probably agree if I could be bothered to go through all the stats.

So has Chimbonda!

think ramos realises defoe makes berba play shit. see:villa match

Arguement against - see from Wigan at home to Villa at home last season... Particularly the Wigan and Bucharest games... Defoe scored 7 and Berbatov 5 in 9 games and had a great understanding/partnership together... Then Keane came back from injury...

defoe rarely sets anyone up. berbatov has to do everything. keane and berba are an awsome partnership. and Ramos knows it.

I don't blame Keane or any of our attackers. We score more than enough goals. In every Man U game Rooney or Tevez or Ronaldo will score goals but also miss easy chances. But in the case of Man U, no-one notices the misses because the team keeps a clean sheet.

I really do have to say that it's time to get a new keeper in the first team. I like Robbo, but in the last few weeks alone he's been personally responsible for letting in about 8 goals. The rest of the defence does need sorting but our first priority should be getting a new keeper.

Do you know why they (Benitez, Ferguson, Wenger) don't say these things??? Because they don't need to. Their teams are doing pretty well, not just at defending set pieces.

Ferguson did have a few blow-outs early on in his time at Man Utd when they weren't playing well. But I agree he doesn't now, though it doesn't bother him one bit that his "hairdryer" treatment is well known to players and football fans alike. His players know exactly what he expects, and if they don't live up to it then there will be hell to pay. I fully believe Ramos is well within his rights to do as he is doing to ensure our squad similarly understands his expectations.

Generally, perhaps. Bit of a pointless thing to say though. We shouldn't concede so many, sure. But when you concede you have to score more, and when you have such easy chances to do so, you have to point just as much blame at the strikers for not taking their chances.

Bottom line:

Attack is not the problem, defence is, followed by midfield.

Of the defence, I'd say that Chimbonda is the least of our problems, CBs are the biggest. I think we need to be looking to sign 2 top, proven CBs. At present we have one CB that can be described as world-class and that's King. Of the rest of our CBs:

Rocha has been inconsistent
Gardner isn't quite up to standard
Dervite is unproven
Kaboul is unproven and error-prone.
Dawson's game has gone seriously downhill and he needs some recuperation.

Fullbacks may not be the problem. According to the way that Ramos played in Spain, he likes his fullbacks to play high up the pitch, for which Chimbonda is ideally suited. We need cover at LB though. For me, Bale would be first choice LB, so we need someone to cover.

Our midfield needs some steel. We need a midfield that can dictate play in the centre of the park and that can also stifle the opposition's movement. In an ideal world, we would get three CMs, one of which would be someone like Diarra. If what can be said about Poulsen is true then he should also be a target (although I worry that he would pick up a lot of cards playing in the Prem). Finally, we need a good LM, either as a first choice or as cover and competition for Malbranque.

And I think we need a new gaolie. My patience with Robbo has run out.

Sadly, I think the biggest problem for us right now isn't the lack of players being available, but rather that we're not going to get the the players we need. I get the feeling that all we'll see is more young, unproven talent who'll be thrown in at the deep end.

That's my tuppence-worth.

If we only can defend better, because we have the attacking quality. I like Ramos' style of playing the game. He does dare to go forward with the team.

I am not really expecting us to do a lot of transfers in this transfer window. Big changes are probably best left until the summer. But then if we don't do a lot of transfer activity, Ramos and Poyet will end up with egg on their faces.
