I thought he played well today, looked to get forward, can obviously cross the ball and generally seemed more comfortable and confident.

There is absolutely zero chemistry between him and Lamela though and he seemed surprised at the lack of give and go with him a few times.

All in all very pleased with all our defenders at the moment which is not something I can usually say!

Another player some of our fans were being unfair to a few months ago and he needed time to settle down which he has, good on him.

I'm not seeing this upturn in performances I'm afraid. Defensively looking more secure yes I'd agree but I think he's offering very little with the ball at his feet and he looks a bit out of place.

Surely if he is looking more secure defensively but still the same attacking then there is still an upturn

I couldn't believe the stick he was getting after a couple of games and said so at the time. Some people are so unrealistic about players if they don't hit the ground flying. It's pretty hard not getting a run of games and just playing here and there.

He was totally at fault for there goal he loses his man because he doesn't defend properly, He actually defends space and hasn't the awareness to deal with people running off of him. He literally had no idea of where the danger was when they scored and ended up defending nothing at all.

I think he is very average at best from his performances so far, ok getting forward but poor defensively

Think you'll find that was Alli who switched off to allow Van Aanholt in.

The full back has to be aware of whats going on outside him - he ended up marking nothing and didn't sense the danger his priority is to defend and he had no idea where the man was who just drifted inside him. It was terrible defending even if a midfield player lets a man go the full back has to cover

I went to the FA cup game and I'm afraid in my opinion he's appalling defensively. Wingers get past him far too easily and he has no recovery pace to at least pressure the cross/shot. The goal on Saturday was Allis fault but trippier was marking nothing, inside him and should've been alert to the danger to cover.

No Alli was at fault. Trippier tucked in to stop balls being put between him and Toby. It was Alli's job to mark Van Arnholt.

It's standard practice in defensive units that when a full back shifts across the nearest midfielder drops in. Alli dropped in but switched off at the vital moment.

So you're saying when Trippier saw Alli marking him, he shouldn't have trusted his team mate, double marked the man, and left a huge space in the penalty area?

Hmmmm but Alli took blame for the goal.

Alli has rarely put a foot wrong this season but was guilty of a lapse in concentration for Sunderland's opening goal on Saturday.

The midfielder failed to track his runner after finding himself in an unusual position at right back but has vowed to learn from the mistake.

"Their goal was against the run of play, a bit of a defensive error from myself but credit to the boys, we picked ourselves up quickly, worked hard and left the game with the three points.

“You have to learn from your mistakes. I’m still young and I’m going to make them, so I’m sure there will be more – but hopefully not too many."

As I said in the match thread today, I'm really liking the attacking options Keiran is giving the team. In too many games we look so narrow and keep trying to force it through the middle. If it does go wide to Walker he rarely seems to want to take a player on anymore and his crosses are woeful. Trippier has been delivering some fantastic balls into the box in his last few games. I'd almost forgotten what a good crosser of the ball brings to the team. I know his defensive game isn't what it needs to be yet and he lacks a bit of pace compared to Walker but he's no slouch. Hopefully the coaching staff can bring on the defensive side of his game. Very happy with is progress though.

I think he has made some good steady progress. Defensively he is behind Walker (Feels odd saying that... Fair play to Walker) but he gives us genuine width.

In 75% of our games the main role of our full backs is to get the basics right defensively and provide and option going forward. Because of that I would have him ahead of Walker at the moment.
