I'm talking strictly fouls on the keepers, not fouls by keepers. Last season slightly backing into a keeper for a goal would be deemed a foul. I don't remember anyone coming out saying they would be more lenient about it, they just started doing it randomly one day.
This is the issue because if they at least say they will be more lenient then we can prepare better for it. I think after the City one we probably need to have done some preparation for it though. I would just get someone protecting the keeper and if someone is tight on the keeper the defender can shove them about. Leave Vicario as free as possible from it all.

I'd be interested to know if the officials said anything at half time being as Everton completely stopped using the 'tactic' of shoving Vicario in the second half. Commentators couldn't understand why they stopped doing it either. If anything was said at half time it's pretty much an admission that they fucked up allowing the goal in the first place.

I thought this as well I can't think of any other explanation.

Yeah it’s a bit weird this. But what I struggle to see is why the Everton team would stop doing it just because the referee told them to stop. I can imagine them stopping if they started receiving a few bookings, but until then why would they bother to stop? It’s not like they would be risking an automatic sending off by doing it?

I mean, the fact that he gave a foul not 5 minutes before the goal says an awful lot about the referees consistency, or lack there of doesn't it?

I’m pretty sure there was something on the Ben Foster podcast a few weeks ago about Howard Web coming out on that ‘ref Mic’d up’ show saying that a certain type of pressure on a goalkeeper was not a foul.

Foster was up in arms saying teams are going to be doing it every match now and that there is nothing the refs are going to be able to do as they will be constrained by what their ‘boss’ has come out and said publicly. He was adamant that, as a goalie, there was nothing you could do in this situation and the ‘keepers needed protection.

Looks like he was right.

This is the key factor for me. It doesn’t matter if it’s a foul or not, it matters that the refs won’t be applying the laws of the game consistently on this type of tactic. So whichever way you cut it we must plan for it to happen and for it to go unpunished.

would love to hear @Shanks opinion on this. he's the resident keeper expert. interested to know for example if it's something he's seen his boy have to deal with.

Regardless of whether it's a foul, teams have noticed and aren't being called up on it, so we need to address it rather than hoping referees do.

Strictly going by the rules the attacking playing has the “right” to the space. All you can really do is put a defender between the keeper and him.

Whether it’s a mistake or not, you just know that he’ll be working to improve and to find a solution rather than letting it fester and develop into a weakness. Technically he’s a top keeper but his mentality seems elite. During the game I was impressed how confidently he claimed a few subsequent corners and crosses when a lot of keepers would’ve second guessed themselves and crumbled having become such an obvious target. Really impressive considering it’s his debut season - many GKs new to this league have had their careers destroyed by similar situations where they’ve struggled to cope with the physicality of the PL. Even in comparison with an experienced World Cup winning captain like Hugo who seemed to struggle to recover from any mistakes and would visibly shrink into his shell, Vic gives off a completely different energy, he puffs out his chest and goes again. I love him.

Yes pal, ive just taken a snapshot of how he deals with it from his game at the weekend, perfevt example (outside of delivery and being backed i to), but pitentially a way to counter act it - i just cant upload short clips from my phone here and no lo ger in thr SC whatsapp group

100% not mistake, and agree his mentality if different level, he wont be moaning about it just working hard to stop it

hello mate, many thanks for this. have gone back a few pages as per instruction and have seen your other really informative posts. it's a weird one for sure as it's such an outdated tactic that you rarely see outside of lower leagues and parks football tbh. most keepers i've played against would just come for the ball regardless and clatter anyone who got in their way. thought the days of throwing the keeper into the net had long gone, clearly not

yeah, that's a great point tbf and probably something that, even if you've played the game, unless you've faced it you can't appreciate it. of course with more pace on the delivery you have less reaction time and not enough to change your mind, i guess whatever your initial move was (stay put or come for it) has to be the one you stick with, even if it's the wrong one. fascinating tbh the more you think about it. will pm you a number albeit you're just down the road from me anyway, i could just pop in haha.

Come along to thr boys game one day pal!

The pace is frightening, i play conference level as a keeper myself, so not too shabby a standard, i cam still hit a ball, but even having my son pass/shoot, its too quick for me, cant explain how well these people play football at
