If he was good on the ball he’d be world class cause there’s no doubt he’s a very very good defender

Nothing like a bit of hyperbole. The term “world class” just seems to be thrown around these days at will.

Even if he was better on the ball he wouldn’t be close to being world class.

His defensive performances in the last 5-6 matches we’ve had to count on him have been top drawer and he’s clearly improved under Conte and suits the RCB role. He is absolutely shocking on the ball in almost every way though whether it be his touch, passing, ball carrying (he overruns it too much) and even his technique with clearances is terrible, but if this wasn’t the case I think people would be just as happy with him as Romero. Unfortunately him being so bad on the ball brings him down quite a few levels but since Conte came in defensively for the most part he’s been very good

Everyone's getting sucked in with the good performance, but forget that there's a shit show around the corner
Yes that's how felt at times when he's in the starting eleven but as games go by I'm more confident that those shit shows are less likely to happen,

True, people just want him to be world class because of the hefty price paid. Truth is he has been a big failure overall.

I've been very critical of him, and deservedly so but he's done very well when called upon. Would never like to see him starting for us, but he's a great option to bring in when we have injuries.

He’s also a great sub to have off the bench when ahead. Good ball-winner, strong in the air, and does fine when asked to simply defend.

Thought he was immense again today. Great option to have as he's so settled with the system and the players around him.

Yes we lose a bit of the ability to play out from the back, but hopefully Lenglet coming in on the left might help with that.

He's been great when needed though over the last season and a half. Long may it continue.

You’re only as good as your last performance.

Take your foot off his neck and credit him for a good performance.

Waiting to say “told you so” must be so draining on your energy.

The guy hasn't done anything wrong in a very long time, infact he's performed very well when called upon yet some STILL try to criticize him.

Didn't put a foot wrong today, actually, thats a disservice as he was very composed on the ball and defended extremely well.

Leave him alone ffs, he's not first choice yet every time he comes in when Romero's injured he does his job very well and doesn't moan about playing time. We should be thankful to have such an excellent back up for Romero.

I think he suits RCB way better than he does CB in a back 4, from memory his best performances when he first joined was him playing RCB when Poch played 3 at the back with Toby at CB and Verts at LCB. He looks much more comfortable.

How much importance are we placing on a CB who comes in, time and time again to fill holes for ‘first teamers’ and rarely puts a foot wrong.

Surely what he lacks in distribution he makes up with reliability. A squad rotation at CB who can be called upon and ever reliable is almost a super power.

Yes he’s made his mistakes in the past … but could we really expect a better back up option? … like others have said he doesn’t complain about game time & imo he’s hugely improved under conte .. whilst he’s no Romero … he’s been very solid when called upon … well played Dav ??

Huh?

We’ve not conceded a goal in the last 10 hrs he’s been on the pitch! Absolutely no problem with him starting at all three days. He’s come on leaps and bounds. Credit to him and conte and coaching staff

When is the last time he had an actual “calamitous” game? He’s been doing really well when called upon by Conte. Honestly I’m not sure we can ask much more of someone who is just a backup CB now. He’s only 26, is it possible he’s maturing as a centre back under Conte and maybe we should stop waffling on the next few windows about needing to replace him and feel good we’ve got someone who’s showing reliability as a backup?
