From what I hear his strop seems to be over. I'm guessing it was down to frustration and not knowing what was happening Madrid have really fucked him about tbh.

He will however need to sit down and sign a new deal otherwise we will look to sell if we can find a buyer. It's just too much money to let him walk away on a free.

This is perfect - if he can get out of his funk, then he's a phenomenal asset.

I also now think we have the right players to bring the best out of him. The midfield is stoked with players who can bring the ball forward and break the press, which will allow him to play in an area of the field where he can hurt teams. Just like he did in 2016/2017

I think it's unlikely he'll sign a new deal, but if there's any chance of him doing so we should do everything we can. Keeping a committed, happy Eriksen would be amazing

I left a decent job because I could not stand the idea of spending my entire career at the same place. It felt like knowing the end of a book when only a few chapters in. So, I can understand Eriksen's itch to find something new, and not have it be a reflection of some dissatisfaction with Spurs. Hopefully he sees our recent acquisitions as part of a new project to be excited about: winning the premier league.

As far as his performance this past season...he missed the early part due to a vague "abdominal" issue, and then had another vague medical procedure after the end of the season. Perhaps he too had a nagging injury that prevented from being in top form for much of the year...

Yes it's a good point. Hopefully he can buy into Poch's 'new chapter'. Things have changed significantly since he arrived!

If he wants to go and we get a solid deal from Real or Atleti, I will understand, albeit worried about our depth!

As for the injury I believe he had a minor corrective surgery for it over the summer break.

I can totally understand why eriksen wants to move to Spain for the last few peak years of his career. However if no Spanish club wants him then surely he should realise he is better off staying here.

I get it, he probably feels he is stale and wants a lifestyle change, but he can’t just move to Spain without a club.

Let’s hope he signs a new deal. I’d hate to see us sell him because we will be left weaker than last season in the AM positions

I wouldn’t start him until he signs a new contract. Then we know he’s fully committed to be here.

I can understand where you are coming from, but let's say he starts, hits top form, moral is up, and he is happy again, he would have more incentive to sign the contract, right? Having him on the bench all the time will just cause more turmoil.

It's a tough time really. If a move is not looking likely then I would encourage him to sign a contract perhaps with a reasonable release clause. Having said that I would imagine that the next 20 days will be with stressful and I would be surprised (unless he has truly now decided to stay) if he and his representatives were not scoring the state of play at the Spanish club constantly.

Why should we cut our nose to spite our face?

We currently have quite a number of players who are missing through suspension or injury. A few newcomers may not be fully fit.

We need all available hands on deck until the others return to the squad.

If we are really keen on getting him to sign a new contract then we should show him so and not ignore him.

He hasn’t thrown his toys out and hasn’t refused to play. He has every right not to sign a new contract if he doesn’t want to.

I know, as fans, we’d all like our best players to stay with the club but we have to be fair and look at it from all sides.

I’m pretty confident with Eriksen we would beat Real Madrid in a tie in the UCL right now.

It’s absurd how good we would be if he would stick around. Better than the 16/17 team for, IMO.

Given what he's brought to the club over the past 6 years I'd definitely say he's earned himself the chance to be forgiven and think him signing a new contract would definitely soften the blow of Dybala falling through. I'd also be interested to see if he could push on another gear now he's got some competition and won't be forced to start every single game.

Why punish him for doing nothing wrong? If it's in our interest to bench him then fine but to just bench him out of spite is ridiculous.

I don't think we can afford to cut our noses off to spite our faces. Dele and Son are unavailable, GLC will not be ready. If Eriksen plays at the level we know he can he will be a real asset and could be a game changer in these opening games. None of us can know if he's going out there to put in half arsed performances when the season kicks off, some have made assumptions that he will but that's all they are at this stage assumptions.
My view is he should start, the proof will be in the pudding, if he's not pulling his weight if he is selected and he then starts agitating for a move and behaves like Berbabtov did before the Man Utd move then bench him or take him out of the team and let him train with the reserves. He hasn't done that yet so we should give him a chance, more is the point, we need to give him a chance given our notable absentees. It would just be stubborn and potentially detrimental to our start if we make up our mind and bench him because of how we think he might apply himself and we presume it's in a negative way before he's even kicked a ball when the season starts.

Hopefully the Lucas contract isn’t the only imminent announcement.

Tottenham star Christian Eriksen's route to Spain looks blocked as Real Madrid and Atletico have other plans

Standard Sport understands Atletico’s interest is more about merchandising, shirt sales and brand value than what the Colombian can bring on the pitch and it is difficult to see how he could fit into Diego Simeone’s system, where €120m summer signing Joao Felix is expected to be a fixture behind strikers Diego Costa and Alvaro Morata.

That would explain why Atleti are focused on James alone. “Our team is competitive for La Liga, the Champions League and all the competitions we will take part in,” president Enrique Cerezo told radio station Kiss Kiss Napoli this week. “Our squad is closed, but you never know.”

" Eriksen’s brand value is nowhere near James’ reach. The Dane has 1.5m followers on Instagram, compared to the Colombian’s 42.7m. Rodriguez is a huge star in his homeland, a football-mad nation with a population of almost 50 million, and across South America."

Would also explain why Real are pushing so hard for Pogba with the Adidas connection etc Welp time for Eriksen to commit to Spurs and win some trophies then.

Madrid's tapping up of players is a real problem. They do that to their back up plans and it causes real uncertainty for the player and the other club. I guess it works for them but it's just not right. And to do so when the player is clearly the managers 4th or 5th choice(like Eriksen is Zidane's), it's really just disgraceful.

DL will definitely not allow this to rumble on till Jan....

It's pretty clear that if he leaves on a free next summer, it will only be after DL called every club in Europe begging to buy him.

The only reason I could understand for him refusing to sign was the lack of transfers. Now there is literally no reason for him not to. I am hopeful.

It sounds like he just wants to experience a different league and way of life, not much we can do if that is the case
