Howard Webb is not fucking about, Lewis Holtby must have knocked some smarts into him

It was thought by some that LM had got too cosy in the VAR room but to be given the complete elbow/asked to leave/or quit before pushed was a big admission that something was wrong.

And here Sky have kindly run an article to show how Arsenal have been victimised on four occasions by VAR, I didn’t realised bad officiating only happened against Arsenal….

It's all a conspiracy to win the league for Manchester City - the club that the Premier League love unquestionably.

Wow. If arsenal had won the game because of a similar mistake, there wouldn't have been any inquest let alone sacking.

This isn't Storey saying Mason doesn't deserve to be let go, and it's a good thing that Webb appears to be taking a harder line against mistakes than that useless epitomisation of the old boy's club Riley did, but people who think there are loads of brilliant refs waiting in the wings will be sorely disappointed.

There's a very good reason why refs are struggling. There aren't enough of them around to create an environment where they get the best out of each other because we've reached a point where refs need body cams just to ref Sunday league games in case they get assaulted. When so many understandably can't be bothered with that abuse, the foundation isn't there for the cream to rise to the top.

The PL in particular can do much more to protect Refs. As an example if more than one player from a club challenges a ref after some disputed decision points should be docked from that club. Arsenal would have no points and be bottom of the PL this season (I hope).

I think the officials in the Prem could help to set an example though. They should start dishing out cards when players (and managers) are rude and disrespectful for starters. If they sent off a few players early in it would set the tone.

Im convinced that lower level officials gets abused by players and their families because it’s what they see on TV.

Sky and BT could also help by stopping going over every single mistake in minute detail with 6 different angles and slow motion. This quest for perfection is a nonsense and not possible. We should accept that they will make mistakes and just get on with it.

An awful ref. No surprise he was shit on var too. Probably the first on a long list of officials who should go. Trouble is, I doubt there’s a long list to replace them.

I said years ago ref’s should have been made accountable for their ‘decisions’
I don’t mean a Spanish Inquisition hearing or with folk prodding pitchforks at them but the refs have always have their arses covered after making real bad calls.
There’s enough bad calls against us alone down the years to fill a book and other clubs have been hard done by as well.
It’s usually the same beneficiaries of these odd decisions and the same teams that get done down by them.
There’s a bias in there somewhere and a lot of it is agitated by Sky Sports who have their agendas to push in pursuit of their perceived beautiful game.

I think that’s definitely part of the problem. Monkey see monkey do with a lot of these lower league players.

There needs to be a proper review into how refereeing works in football. There have always been token gestures like the pitiful respect campaign that walked the walk but didn’t talk the talk. Like you say a strict adherence to the concept that players don’t abuse refs would help stamp it out. But I’d go a step further. We don’t have these issues in rugby, and while I accept that’s a very different player/supporter base, I think only the captains being allowed to talk to the ref would be a big help on cutting out the abusive behaviour.

The premier league need to stump up some cash too. Invest in the future of refereeing.

Target graduates of sports science degrees etc etc. Have a genuine attempt at a proper recruitment and retention strategy. There’s oodles of cash in the game and some of it really needs directing to such a vital part of the game.

The standard of refs is awful. But that’s not an unsolvable issue.

I was a ref for over 30 years. In my last game I sent off a mouthy young man for calling me a dickhead. The following Tuesday at our ref’s meeting I was criticised because the word used wasn’t considered “sweary” enough. My kit bag - whistle, boots, flags, uniform etc - is still in the bottom of my wardrobe, unopened since that evening.

I referred a kids 5 a side tournament and one kid kept running into his box to clear the ball(only keeper allowed in box).I repeatedly warned him his coach and his father about it to no avail; Last minute of the game match at 2 each along he came again into the box.
Did the decent thing blew whistle pen awarded, pen scored, bedlam on the touchline ,but the power I felt ; Christ it was good !!!
