Porto refuses first proposal, but Premier League club does not give up on Pepê

Tottenham are interested in acquiring the player; Grêmio is entitled to a 12.5% capital gain, provided the transaction exceeds €15 million

Porto, from Portugal, refused a proposal from Tottenham, from England, for the sale of Pepê, as GOAL learned. The values are kept confidential, but the Lusitanians rejected the molds presented by the British in the football market.

The London club still haven't given up on signing the 26-year-old Brazilian and may try a new investment until the end of the local transfer window, on September 1st. The strategy has not yet been detailed.

The Brazilian arrived in Porto in July 2021, after defending the colors of Grêmio – the sale was formalized for € 15 million. Tricolor gaucho is entitled to 12.5% capital gain from a future negotiation of the player.

An original striker, Pepê has played as a right-back for Porto. The way of playing even made the player receive praise from coach Sérgio Conceição, who defended the call of the athlete to the Brazilian national team.

The Brazilian has a contract at Estádio do Dragão until June 30, 2027. The athlete's last renewal was in October last year. He is treated as one of the main names of the club today.

Pepê played 55 matches for Porto last season, totaling 4,256 minutes on the pitch. The athlete scored five goals and provided ten assists for his teammates in 2022/2023. In the current campaign, he played in three games, adding 270 minutes. The player has yet to score goals or assist.

The good football at Estádio do Dragão makes Pepê coveted by the Italian national team. The local federation notified Porto with the intention of summoning him to the team led by Roberto Mancini. The Brazilian has an Italian passport and can play for the team. He was also wanted by Paraguay, but showed no interest in playing for the team.

Now here I almost thought it was old Mr Shithouse himself being linked to us.

Not that keen on either tbf.

Don't know much about him really but he's been used in a variety of positions.

Profiles interestingly as a winger though. He is in the top 99th percentile for take on attempts and successful take ons. Top 97th percentile for carries in to the final third, top 98th percentile for progressive carries and carries in to the penalty area.

In other words, he's an extremely good ball carrier and dribbler.

Yeah dunno how good he actually is but on paper his profile does make a lot of sense for Ange tbf.

More so than Johnson as a dribbly 1v1 winger.

No idea how good this guy is, but this is the profile of a player that makes much more sense as an alternative to the likes of Doku and Chiesa than Brennan Johnson does.

It's very important when we use FBref not to get sucked into what positions he is being compared to. While he does profile as an elite dribbler, just an FYI:

- Pepe is comparable on Fbref to fullbacks and midfielders (CMs)
- Johnson is comparable to Att Mids/Wingers and Forwards

You'll notice the difference in the goals/assists/shooting areas of the chart. Pepe looks really good, with lots of green bars, but Johnson does not - although many of their stats are comparable in those areas.

Where Pepe does stand out though (and prob why a suitor to Ange's system) is successful take-ons per 90 and shot creating actions

Now it's Spursonal

Zero mentions in English press - I guess Agent generating interest
It reminds me of the Luis Diaz deal in January tbh, top Portuguese sources coming out with it out of nowhere.
Will now be interesting to see if the English media follows suit.

Sounds like agent driven bullshit. With us struggling to make non-HG player limits I find it hard to believe we would target a 26 yr old Brazilian in a position we are well stocked.

I'm aware of this but if you look at his ball carrying and dribbling numbers per 90, they are still good measured against other wingers.

The age profile is defo not what we'd usually go for, but I suppose if we went for a homegrown CB it could work. And RW is a position where we could use depth.

I reckon you're right and it's just agent stuff, though. We've been similarly linked to him before and absolutely nothing came of it.

Honestly don’t think there’s much truth at all about this. I just don’t see it at the financials being mentioned.
