New documentary on Netflix about the GOAT.

It’s a great watch, and you get to see the greatest International side of all time in the 1970 World Cup.

Do yourself a favour and watch it.

Thanks for the heads up but I will skip it until the sequel is out about the life and Career of Matt Doherty.

The documentary itself wasnt anything special IMO but was worth a watch for some of the footage of the matches at least. Even the more well-known clips it seemed like they had remastered/higher-quality versions of the footage so you could appreciate what was happening a bit more even if you've seen the goal already. Worth a watch if say.

My dad bought me his video on vhs years ago. Pele this, Brazil 70 that. The documentary just confirms to me that I’ve seen better players throwing their guts up at the side of the park on a Sunday. Bang average player! Ok, he shot from the half way line, and missed. He made that goalie look like an absolute idiot with his dummy and missed, He scored 1200 goals in 1300+ games so what?

joking aside , you can still see when watching him what a special player he was, gliding past defenders with ease and ability that is still relevant at this time. His touches are unbelievable, effortless and majestic. It hard to compare player from different eras but let’s not fool ourselves, under modern training and coaching he’d simply be unstoppable.

Yeah you can clearly see from the clips of him how effortless he made football look and how his technique and the way he used the ball was way ahead of his time. But it's also so noticeable how a good 80% of a match was played at walking pace back then, it was a different sport to football today in terms of physical demands.

There should be little doubt he was an exceptional player for his time, and a top level longevity of 12 years 58-70 is impressive even today.

well if Pele is overrated shit because of the era in which he played what is Jimmy Greaves?

ffs
You're misreading my intentions somewhat, Pele dominated two World Cups 12 years apart, was unlucky with his injury in '62 but absolutely brutalised in '66. Of course he was a fantastic player and probably the best in the world all those 12 years, his results at the highest level of the game proves that.

But I feel comparing football players throughout history isn't fair on anyone. Pele played walk-ball but was far superior technically and read the game much better than any of his peers. Maradona played in the era where players probably received the least protection from refs at any point in modern history (though Pele's experience in '66 was similar). Ronaldo and Messi are undoubtedly superior players to both but this is mainly because of the improvements in training, diet and physicality that top football as a whole has made over the last 25-30 years.

I'd like to call Pele the best player of his era, Maradona the best of his era, Messi the best of his era, and just stop trying to compare them. The different ways football was played in those respective eras makes it impossible.

Applying modern training and coaching only means he'd be in proper condition to cope with today's game. It doesn't mean he'll suddenly stand out further than he did in his era.

Sadly it feels like just a matter of time. If Brazil win this World Cup I hope he can hang on long enough to see it.
