I have given my views and an early evaluation on the £100m spent in the summer and I'm concerned that we have so far failed to get a decent return on our investment or a return fitting the investment laid out.
I've summarised my opinions by purchase

  • Capoue £9M - Looked excellent until injury, and believe he will regularly secure one of the DM positions for the long term. Shame about injury, but if he gets back to same level, we have a great athletic player on our hands.
  • Chadli £7m - Delivered very little so far, but the odd glimpse has failed to impress
  • Soldado £26m - Doesn't have the pace, power of strength to play as lone striker and this is clearly evident. worry that we've spunked £26m on a striker that doesn't fit the system. Either the system changes or we are left considering a £26m balls up
  • Eriksen £11.5M - Little lightweight and inconsistent, but has shown glimpses of quality. I do see why we were unchallenged for his signature from the so called bigger clubs. I do believe he'll get better and prove to be a good investment
  • Lamela £28M - Can't evaluate when he's not played. I believe this is a Baldini signing, and maybe AVB is trying to prove a point in terms of authority. Dangerous game to play when there is nearly £30m at stake and the negative effect this is having on the lads confidence
  • Chiriches - £9m - Tidy, composed if a lacking a bit of pace. Is getting better by the game

Every single player has gone backwards from either their start with us or their form before coming to Spurs bar Capoue who has been injured and Chiriches. No real excuse either as it's not as if they've all played at the same time/not been rotated/havent had games against some of Europe's backwaters. Damning.

All very good players, as is Paulinho, we have a much better squad than before...of course losing Bale is a big blow especially after the loss of Modric...they problems lie elsewhere

Capoue - agreed.
Chadli - agreed.
Soldado - He has played up front on his own for Valencia and excelled. Playing up front on his own isn't the issue. Providing him with the right kind of service is. That and him finding a bit of confidence in front of goal - an issue that effects pretty much every striker now and again.
Eriksen - agreed.
Lamela - I don't believe for a second that this has anything to do with AVB showing Baldini that he won't be dictated to. I've no reason to believe that AVB wasn't every bit as keen to sign Lamela as Baldini was. I'm fairly certain that AVB is just treating Lamela much as he treated Lloris last season - easing him gently into Premier League football while also not summarily dropping a popular player (Townsend, Friedel) without giving them a proper chance. I have no doubt that Lamela will soon be in the starting line up.
Chiriches - hardly lacks pace if the way he made up so much ground on Remy for that King-esque tackle yesterday is anything to go by. It's his comparative aerial weakness that could be more of a concern against the more physical PL forwards. But I really like what I see of him overall.

Paulinho (since you failed to mention him!) - curate's egg. Some good. Some anonymous. At fault for yesterday's goal. I think he needs a rest.

It is not evaluating them individually but evaluating whether they have improved the team that matters. Playing Paulinhio has meant not playing Sandro, for example (i know they both played yesterday).

Buying players effectively must relate to a plan and identifying areas that need improving.

We seemed to start with a plan in the summer but unless we were going 4-3-3 with three strong midfield players and three goal scoring attackers, which seemed to be the original plan, we seem to have bought to many players where we are strong already- central midfield, and a player who doesn't fit into that system at all- Erickson.

Up front we needed pace and power, to replace Bale. Lamela may offer it, Soldado does not.

The idea that you can sell a great player for a huge price and get a few very good ones with the money and improve your team has never actually worked for any team in practice and it hasn't worked for us.

I hope CE comes good he was a star in the CL for Ajax, he created the most chances yesterday of all the attacking mids in the prem think it was 8/9, most over the weekend

I haven't got the time now but I doubt that that's a statement that stands up to close scrutiny. I'd be very surprised if there aren't plenty of examples of clubs improving enormously having sold one great player but ending up with a better team.

Besides, it's a bit ridiculous to say that "it hasn't worked" when we are a mere two and a half months into these players' first season with the club.

Yeah, Chiriches is pretty damn quick, I think this myth that he lacks pace stems from his debut where he was probably very nervous.

can't wait for Chadli to come back from injury, really want to see what he is like with run of games and confidence, think could be underrated

That included free kicks and corners, which accounted for 4 or 5 of those 'chances'.

That is so far from true it's not even funny. Juventus post-zidane? How about Roma and Napoli right now? That's just off the top of my head without even doing any research.

errr... Not how I saw it. Brad backing off then deciding late to come out was the killer. That ball was made to be smothered by a charging Keeper. Brad was indecisive & slow.

Bit harsh, but he is 42 years old and was never going to get out like Lloris. You can't play a high line with Friedel and Dawson as it proved yesterday

Did you see how easily Paulinho lost possession? You can't blame Brad for not saving a one on one situation

They have played together quite a lot actually, its not one or the other, Sandro was injured and had to come back slowly.

Eriksen****************** can play in a 4-3-3 though.. Soldado isn't supposed to be main replacement, only replace the goal aspect, he creates a lot of chances for other team mates and does have some power in him, and he would be scoring a lot if others were creating for him
