Flip side to that - Aren't you glad we did not spend all of our money backing Nuno? We saved a bit for Conte in January, and then quite a bit for this summer...

Bentancur and Deki (and Romero) helped get the team on track - helped keep Conte - helped keep Kane satisfied.

No matter how this summer finishes - I am happy with the business - both the ins, and the commitments to getting some players out. We did not spend blindly, we targeted players to fill specific roles. Now its on the players and Conte to maximize their strengths.
I agree, despite my intermittent moans I’m quite happy with the club’s business since we’ve appointed Conte.

I think I said back in January that the best move we made last summer was not spunking an insane fee on Traoré as his fee and relative one-dimensional play would restrict us heavily going forward. It’s a good point you raise.

More than anything we are directly buying for the manager and to his exact specifications, and that can only be viewed as a positive. OTOH I think going for someone like Zaniolo over Maddison or Paqueta might be too heavily influenced by their Italian connection, but I suppose it is all rumours.

Hmm not sure about that. My opinion is Conte knows well what Lucas offers at RWF and so is using preseason to try him in alternative positions to see how he fares. Lucas is unlikely to be first choice as RWF, but if he offers versatility across multiple positions then he can be a very valuable option from the bench or in rotation for cup games.

Lucas is going to need that versatility to get enough minutes, especially if we're looking at bringing in Zaniolo to compete for attacking positions. Lucas can become our James Milner, he'll work hard for the team whichever position he plays.
Yeh you could well be right about that. If we get Zaniolo though, Lucas is likely going to be the extra floating guy that can cover in at multiple positions.

Weird way of looking at things - blaming the current regime for the sins of prior regimes...

Gil - very worthy punt
Gollini - worthwhile punt that did not work out, and we sent him back.
Emerson - Conte seems to find him acceptable - so I would not put him in the trash bin just yet. Also, bought for a back 4, hard to say that was a bad purchase.
Sarr - again - decent punt, looks like we have a legitimate player who still needs to develop.

So your biggest gripe is we loaned in a young keeper to try out as a potential Lloris successor, and we did not exercise a buy option.

Then, you add in Romero, Bentancur, and Deki - I'd say the Paratici/Conte partnership has been quite successful.
To add to that, it’s clear things have changed since Conte arrived, which was after last Summers window. It’s hard to not see that we have done things differently and we are going to have to wait to see if Paratici with Conte is different than he was with Nuno. Anecdotally it feels very different, even in our approach to signing early, so hard to not be optimistic that we are seeing a new way of doing things and so far it passes the eye test,

Not picking on you obviously but what makes you have this suspicion that he will be a revelation? Ill put it another way, if Arsenal were bringing in this guy I am certain most on here would be like - he is shite and has regressed since he burst on to the scene etc etc etc

I personally, dont have a clue about him as a player so im not fussed if we get him or not, although I do really want us to bring in someone more attacking.

I would prefer Maddison on the basis that I have seen him moreso than Zaniolo, but that seems unlikely
For me it’s more a case of having followed him since he was in Inters youth team. I rember thinking it was such dumb move by Inter swapping him for Nainggolan because he looked like a fantastic talent. He was a player I really wished we had snagged at that point and pre injury at Roma he looked every bit a future superstar.

My qualms over signing him have always been mostly based over his ACL injuries and if he could still make good on his original potential. He looked solid last season but very streaky. He still seems to have the ability that made him look special but you could tell he was still adjusting. But that is to be expected all things considered and I don’t think Jose was ever going to be the man to get him back to his best. I know Paritici has been a long time fan but if Conte believes in his talent and his ability to develop it then that’s good enough for me.

As said, it’s never been a question of talent for me. And so far this pre season he has looked sharper and faster then he did all last season. Yes it’s pre season but he looks to have regained some of his speed and that for me is already very encouraging. Yes I would still pick Paqueta as my top choice but there is a lot to be excited about with Zaniolo if Conte really wants him.

You know far more than I know of him so im not one to question the judgement. All I know is his injuries and dont think we can afford to spend £x amount on someone who is susceptible to injuries. He missed a third of last season, admittedly all on google, not to mention the other games he missed due to the ACL, but that worries me like you say.

I dont even know Paqueta either and thats why for me its Maddison. You kinda know what youre going to get with him and you know that he wont need much time to settle etc which brings its advantages. But if Leicester wont sell then we have our hands tied in who we can get.

This is Zaniolo vs Sunderland in preseason - absolutely convinced PL physicality will not be a problem for him. More like, if he actually starts running with the ball in center of midfield, he is going to terrify some defenses in PL

My problem with this transfer is that it’s high risk. Not only past injury problems and mentions from past coaches about a dubious attitude, on top of the usual risks of bringing a player in from abroad that’s never played in the PL.

It’s as if the odds of success is stacked against you from the start. Granted.. the upside could be huge, but that’s the same with the obvious alternative that seems to be Maddison, which isn’t anywhere near as risky.

I know people will point me in the direction of Bentancur and Kulusevski and state we should give Paratici full backing, but them Transfers were no where near as risky as this one.

I just think we don’t often get this level of owner investment, let’s not gamble it on a player that is so risky.

Whilst I do agree with a lot of what you say, there's that nagging club motto that's always at the back of my head knocking on the door

there is risk any transfer..but I can say this isn’t high risk. He has so much quality and he would imo succeed in the games where we struggle

Think this might be the one. With Roma securing both Dybala and Wijnaldum, I reckon Jose will be happy to take the money and reinforce his defence/midfield with it.

He's an interesting one. Lots of potential but has only shown it in fits and starts. He would suit the PL well but yeahhh. I would be happy with this move but not particularly excited. Obviously, the fact he is another option that could cover CF helps.
