For a Chairman desperate to qualify for the Champions League, we have spent - £30mil since we last qualified.

2013/2014: -£2,700,000
2012/2013: -£1,300,000
2011/2012: - £27,000,000

What about all the agent frees and loyalty payments? You cannot simply add the reported sale money from the purchase money and say we made a profit. Also, how do you know how much we receive and have to pay and over how many years instalments?

And yet we've assembled a much better squad than we had in 2010/11. Making money isn't a bad thing especially when there is still a large investment in the squad and we have a stadium to pay for. We broke our transfer record 3 times in one summer, so I don't think Levy has shown some huge lack of ambition as is implied. Everyone was happy with our squad until Arse got Ozil, not much has changed since Friday bar poor lb cover.

You might have heard of our plans to sign this Armenian lad, called Sta Dium. He's fucking expensive.

It's frustrating but we have to deal with it. Arsenal did.

In 10/11 we had 3 world class players. Now we don't have 1 maybe thats a keeper. No outfield player in our squad is on the level of Bale, Modric or VDV.

Bale was nowhere near world class in 10/11. You want to wait until you've seen some of our players play for us before claiming they are so inferior. Paulinho and Sandro might be Brazil's starting central midfield come the world cup in the summer, Lamela is one of the biggest prospects in world football (and probably ahead of the curve Bale was on at the same age), Eriksen was the number 1 chance provider in all of the major leagues last season, Chiriches was being linked to Barcelona just a year ago.

I think people are freaking out unnecessarily. It's not about net spend, it's about putting together the best squad we can. If we can do that whilst balancing the books we will be better for it in the long run. This is our strongest and deepest squad in the Premiership era and people are freaking out because we didn't sign someone on deadline day.

Yup. I think we are trying to pay off as much of it as possible up front, so that we have less dependence on loans and other funding.

Why is this a bad thing? Surely it's a sign of a good chairman who runs the club properly. He's invested in the squad wisely with the money we have all the while spending on the new training ground, property around WHL and the stadium. If he was in Spurs to rip all the money from it he wouldn't have reinvested the full 100mill that he did do. In fact, many are surprised he spent more than 50mill. Also remember, we have been running on a loss the last couple of years and have racked up some debt in the process. If you want us to spend millions upon millions, think Leeds and Portsmouth.

I like the a club who spends within it's means. It brings a sense of soul, identity and respect to the cluband pride to support it . If we didn't do so we'd just be another Chelsea/City/PSG. Call me idealistic or whatever, but the way they've gone about getting to the level they are now at I think of as cheating and taking the fun out of the game and I'd wouldn't feel complete if that was what my club did. Imagine buying Football Manager but instead of playing the game properly you hack it and make it so your team has all the best players from the start. Ok, you'd win, but would you feel happy with your success?

I see threads like this and wonder how people can have such tunnel vision?

Yes, in the end we didn't spend much more than we sold.

But what did we do with that money?

It's not as though we sold off 30m in players and bought only 28m in return.

It was over 100m spent. This club could have spent 50-60m and justified it by saying they were saving up for the stadium. Instead they added 7 players that will start for us either immediately or in the near future and have received rave reviews for the business done.

The fact remains the most important thing for this club is the development of the stadium. Be thankful they put all the huge amounts of money we just sold back into the club.

We lose bale (huge loss)

Bring in Lamela,Soldado,Eriksen,Capoue,Paulinho, Chadli and Chiriches which will make the squad twice as stronger.

Negative transfer spend ??

More like Genius Levy!!!!!!

I really dont get spurs fans that bring negatvity over the fact that we spent "2.7million" on the transfers this 2013/14 season but yet bring in 7 quality signings.

Please man, your better than that.

I think both Soldado and Llamela could be considered at around that level actually. But lets wait till say January before making that judgement.

The negative spend underlines the great business this summer. As has been said, Bale is not the kind of talent we could replace with a single player. Instead we've added depth to our defence, steel and creativity to our midfield, and that top drawer striker we've been after for ages. Let's see how they gel over the next few games.

I think the negativity from the fans is unbelievable. On Friday there was talk of winning the league and how amazing our squad was, then we lost to Arsenal and there were a lot of comments suddenly about how our new players were underperforming, we lacked creativity etc.

Then Arsenal signed Ozil from Madrid and some people were talking about how Madrid who we have a relationship with had just helped our rivals and probably stopped us from getting top 4.

I just think it is all way too soon to comment on our future and we should just enjoy how our new group of players are going to perform. There are some really exciting players who we've seen nothing of yet and the group as a whole has pretty much had no time to gel. I'm fairly sure our football will improve a lot and we'll start opening teams up. It'll be an exciting year!

So what is your point?

Are you saying that the players we have signed are all crap and that we shouldn't have signed them? Are you saying that spending £100m in a transfer window isn't enough? Do you have a figure that the club should spend on transfers? If so, why?

This is one of the problems with the Sky-ification of football... Milking the publicity of the transfer market has meant that people obssess about the size of transfer fees. Özil is a great player - but I suspect what makes the gooners happier than anything else is that he cost £42m. They still have a pretty bare squad - when the CL kicks in, if they pick up a few injuries they're going to find it hard to maintain consistency.

Back to our window - hey we didn't spend all our cash... but we lost 1 first team player and brought in 7 - that's what's important - the fact that we still have money in the bank shouldn't be a negative - that should be a sign of good business (cue obligatory Leeds United comment). We've lost our world class player & maybe 1 or 2 of the 7 will turn out to be flops (transfers are always a gamble) - but they all look to have potential to be excellent players. No they weren't against l'arse - but the playmakers didn't play and the others are still getting used to the team and the league.

Patience people - and this is a good read on the cult of the vanity player - http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2013/jul/30/big-transfer-comfort-food-clubs

Despite offloading the likes of Bentley and Gallas I feel sure that our wage bill must have grown a fair bit, but I also agree that the stadium must be a priority for the long-term prosperity of the club.

To have built up a squad like ours, with a negative transfer spend over the past 3 years, and built Europes finest training facilities, and closed the gap on the top 4 and bought up all the land for our new stadium, is pure genius I would say.
