And if VAR wasn't in use the offside goal gets flagged before the ball ends up in the net.

This !

The ironic thing about this game is how its always going to be remembered for VAR, and used to try and take credit away from us.

But in fact :

(1) Ref gives Llorente goal. Is persuaded to check it on VAR - and no decision change.

(2) Lino keeps flag down as per 'play on if unsure about offside' rule, then tells ref he thinks it was offside. They check and it was.

So again - no decision change.

So... bollocks was it about VAR !

PS The only flaw in my argument is if the Lino didn't actually make that call, and someone in VAR room made it. So far nobody has cared to check that one out...

PPS Fuck 'em anyway !

Still can't get over last night, I've been rolling about all day. The game seemed to capture everything there is about being a Spurs fan. Just pure emotion

I agree. Some people just want to blame the new system. I had an interesting conversation at work this morning....

Him. VAR ruined the game last night and changed the result. The game should be replayed.

Me. How so?

Him. They didn't show the ref the best angle that showed it was a handball. And VAR is only meant to change clear and obvious errors.

Me. But handball is a deliberate act of handling the ball. Even if he'd seen the other angle it wouldn't be handball because he's trying to keep his hands close to his body.

Him. Agreed, it's not handball.

Me. So if it wasn't handball there was no clear and obvious error? So the goal should've stood.

Him. ???

I think there is something they added to the water in 2016.

Mutually exclusive or not, I genuinely believe this CL run is a bigger shot in the arm for us currently than winning the Carabao would have been, and we could still yet even compete in the final or even win the damn thing anyway!

It's huge for our profile and the belief of the players and manager. It's all been about building things gradually since Poch arrived and somehow we're very close to taking another step forward despite this season being an absolute cluster****.

If we keep competing in CL QFs and beyond the domestic trophies will surely come.

Was just thinking the same earlier. A year or two ago people were saying - quite fairly - that a Carabao or FA Cup was needed to take us to the next level and give the players confidence in themselves.

Reaching the CL semi-finals has surely done exactly that for us, except in a far bigger way. Not to mention the wins against Real Madrid, Inter and Dortmund, and the draw in the Nou Camp, over the past couple of seasons. We are achieving on the biggest stage of all and in doing so are becoming a far bigger club (and hopefully more attractive to potential signings) than we would have done by winning a Carabao Cup.
