Man City will probably be a bit more willing to sell to us now. They'll need to make their finances a bit more realistic and selling the likes of adebayor, Johnson and others will help them.

Adebayor maybe, Johnson has agreed a new contract.

They'll have to take more hits and continue to pay players that they sell or negotiate a pay off.

It was never going to happen.

Uefa has decided to shelve proposals to impose a transfer ban on clubs that breach its financial fair-play rules on the grounds that its planned penalties will be legally unenforceable.

The European governing body confirmed on Tuesday that plans to impose a transfer embargo have been dropped, despite the support of leading clubs, because they believe they would be unable to enforce such rules.

That is quite interesting. I wonder if the series of sanctions is going to turn into no sanctions at all.

Banning clubs from their own competition must be enforceable though, surely?

Thus encouraging the big teams to fuck off and make their own competition.

I remain far from convinced that these rules will be properly enforced.

It's all well and good banning a small club like Man City from the CL. But what if Real Madrid or Barcelona breach the rules? Do you really think UEFA would ban them?

They already do and it was a point I raised earlier in the thread. You feel that UEFA would be shooting themselves in the foot.

Thats a strange one. I seem to remember Montpellier getting relegated for ending the season in the red in France, so it's not as though it can't be done.

The issue with the likes of Real and Barca was always going to be a stumbling block, but the likes of Man City and any number of unknown russian clubs must surely fall into a category of clubs simply taking the piss. I'm not saying there should be different rules for different clubs but clubs like City and Anzhi are soulless shells who do more harm to football's credibility than any amount dodgy ref's or racist presidents!

They operate a similar rule in Germany too. You're only allowed to be a certain amount in the red to join the Bundesliga every year.
