He has good potential, but people are expecting too much already. We've seen him play probably about 45 minutes of premiership football in total, we don't know how good he will be, but we really shouldn't assume anything.

Carroll didn't play for the England u21s much, whereas Holtby captained Germany's. And I think we both know which out of those two is the better side..

Let's not forget, there's only a year and a halfs difference between them too. One of them has bossed Arsenal in the champions league and has completed 3 years as a starter week in week out in one of the world's best leagues, the other is playing regularly for the first time in his career in the championship.

Here's something which should bring the whole thing into perspective a little - Eriksen is the same age as Carroll. Think about how big a gap there is between those two right now..

I can spot a player.

The kid's got it.

Well, I hope so. But we might not see 'it' for a while yet, fans need to be patient with him.

Also, I can't say I'm not a little disappointed that I wrote all of that and you replied with simply, 'I can spot a player, the kid's got it'. :D

Carroll is too good for the Championship. The only reason he hasn't excelled is because he hasn't been given a proper chance in the Lilywhite shirt. When he has had a few minutes he's looked exceptionally composed.

Holtby and Carroll are slightly different players, Holtby certainly possesses more of a goal threat and a presence but I don't think he quite has the orchestrating qualities that Carroll has.

I don't see the point in comparing Holtby & Carroll. They share similar qualities, but they play different roles.

Holtby is an attacking-minded box-to-box midfielder. Does his best work picking out killer passes & playing one-twos in the final third whilst doing a lot of closing down & tackling.

As for Carroll, I'm under the impression that he'll be developed as a short, deep-lying playmaker in the Xavi/Modric/Cabaye mould. Sure, he'll do some work in the final third, but his main role is to control the game & set up attacks from deep. At least that's the impression I'm under; I need to see him play more.

Holtby is currently fighting Paulinho & Eriksen for a spot, Carroll would be fighting for Dembele's spot if he were here.

If Lewis figures against manure, he's going to have to really show something imo. Or when everyone if fit he's gonna struggle to get minutes in the prem.

I wouldnt call Holtby 'box to box' at all, he hasnt got the legs to get up and down. He's either a 'deep lying playmaker' or a 'no10'.

I wouldnt write him off just yet. Yes hes been here a year and hasnt done much, but thats a year under AVB's management. He's got a clean slate for me now, and like Paulinho, I fully expect to see a different player over the next month or two. The lads quality, anyone thats watched him for Germany or Schalke knows this. He's clearly just lacking confidence.

Will definitely give him the benefit. He should get some minutes now with Paul'o out for so long, so it'll be a good period to get his game together under timbo and show what he's really about.

Maybe he doesn't have the endurance yet, but he certainly has the work-rate. I definitely wouldn't call him a deep lying playmaker either; Sherwood employed him in that role against West Brom and his performance was really underwhelming to say the least. He's never been one to dictate the tempo of a match ala Modric, his best work is playing killer passes, one-twos & scoring goals in the final third.

Hasnt played well there in a Spurs shirt agreed, but he's only had a couple of games there (like 2).

Peoples expections are unrealistic. Holtby has excellent qualities good first touch good left foot German international he will turn out to be a very good player. No way should we be even considering in letting him go. At his age stage of progress and with more EPL experience we have a very good player on our hands in the next few seasons.

Well, put it this way, if timbo somehow stays in the hot seat for a longer haul than stated, it will happen.

He loves 'im...and so do I.

And I will call out anyone who talks shit about Carroll or Lamela...and you can pair up if ya like...and you can fucking pick someone else to help ya...and you can bring yer fucking dinner, because by the time I've finished with you you'll fucking need it!

He can be box to box, deep lying play maker or a no. 10. The problem against West Brom was that he was being played as a defensive mid next to Eriksen, or at least it seemed he didn't really know what the role he was supposed to be playing that game. At Schalke he played a full season as DLP next to a DM, and he was great there. The next half season he played as a no. 10, but I think he would be great as a box to box in a 4-3-3

I don't think Lewis has played any less than I expected. It makes you wonder what we say to these players when we sign them in terms of playing time if he's already considering ditching us.

If Levy decides to sell, we can make at least 10 million pounds from his sale.
