Could lewis be a victim of the managerial shake up?

Holtby, 23, joined Spurs in January on a four-year contract from Bundesliga club Schalke in a knockdown £1.5m deal.

The German, who has only featured once from the start under new boss Tim Sherwood, admitted he would consider a move back to his native country.

"I would never rule out a return to the Bundesliga," Holtby said.

"Especially to Schalke, where I had a great time, even though it might have come across differently during my move a year ago.

"Things can happen very quickly. English football especially doesn't sleep."

Holtby has been a star performer in Spurs' Europa League campaign - playing all six group matches - scoring twice as former boss Andre Villas-Boas led the side to six wins from six.

But the former Bochum and Mainz midfielder has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in the Premier League for Spurs, something which Holtby is looking to improve.

He said: "In football things can happen very fast. At this point in time it's a real up and down for me in sporting affairs.

"There is a big competition for a first-team spot and, although I have had rather rare appearances, I have gained nine assists and three goals thus far this term. This is a good quota!

"I definitely want to be more involved in the starting 11

I'd like to see him stick it out with us for a while yet. I still think he has something to offer

If we're prepared to adopt a fast, attacking game style, keep him.

If we're going to play him as a holding midfielder, in other words, the role Timmy played him in against West Brom, then sell.

I rate him really really highly, and he's got super potential as a box-to-box midfielder, but if we're not going to play him properly, we might as well sell him.

Just to remind people of how good he can be, watch this:

I'd be disappointed in anything outside of a short loan back to Shalke and the transfer of Draxler or Howedes in return.

Would be daft to get shut. Anyone who saw him at the U21s would tell you that. He's our only genuine CM bar Carroll who can play an incisive pass.

He's just suffering from competition for places at the moment. I think selling Sigurdsson and shifting Eriksen into a more forward role would help him. When the Europa Cup comes back around and if we smash the Goons then there will be more opportunities for Lewis this season.

Long-term I'm hoping Tim or whoever the next manager is going to be is looking to adopt a 4-3-3 where Lewis would fit in as 1 of 2 playmakers very nicely.

I'm not sure he has bigger potential than Carrol. I think he will be off in summer but I wish him all the best in future becouse he's really top lad and hard-worker.

I don't want him to go but I haven't been that impressed with him. Eriksen has impressed me much more in a shorter time and he's been injured...

Sorry Spurr, I think Carroll is a great prospect but he hasn't played enough premiership minutes for any of us to really know how good he could / couldn't be.

I don't think he has the amount of potential that Holtby has. I think Carroll looks a tidy player, but he's being a bit over-hyped on this site at the minute. I like him as a player, and hope he'll forge a career with us, but in my opinion Holtby has a far higher ceiling.

Oh, I thought you were saying you were certain that Carroll had a higher potential. We can be friends again now :)

Couldn't disagree with that more.

Carroll will be our modric; it will happen. Lewis hasn't got that sort of potential in his back pocket. Carroll is just on another level intrinsically and will develop on a higher path.

I think saying he will definitely be our Modric is taking it a bit too far at this stage, but his potential is huge

He has good potential, but people are expecting too much already. We've seen him play probably about 45 minutes of premiership football in total, we don't know how good he will be, but we really shouldn't assume anything.

Carroll didn't play for the England u21s much, whereas Holtby captained Germany's. And I think we both know which out of those two is the better side..

Let's not forget, there's only a year and a halfs difference between them too. One of them has bossed Arsenal in the champions league and has completed 3 years as a starter week in week out in one of the world's best leagues, the other is playing regularly for the first time in his career in the championship.

Here's something which should bring the whole thing into perspective a little - Eriksen is the same age as Carroll. Think about how big a gap there is between those two right now..

bloody hell our youth gets overhyped on here. Holtby has played as a full international for germany for goodness sake. In the same positions as reus, ozil, gotze, etc

Well, put it this way, if timbo somehow stays in the hot seat for a longer haul than stated, it will happen.

He loves 'im...and so do I.

And I will call out anyone who talks shit about Carroll or Lamela...and you can pair up if ya like...and you can fucking pick someone else to help ya...and you can bring yer fucking dinner, because by the time I've finished with you you'll fucking need it!
