Before the backlash begins, I think that kaboul could do a good job as a midfielder. he is very young and i believe that he has played as a defensive midfielder for his previous club. I think he can go one better, he's very strong and athletic, he can pass the ball and has an eye for the unexpected, he has a very good shot on him (we have very few players who actually score from outside the box).

If i'm not mistaken i do believe that Baptista was a defender turned into an attacker by either Ramos or Caparros (the previous Seville manager) and done extremely well as he could bulldoze his way past defenders.

Kaboul could do exactly the same, he can be nurtured by Poyet to time his runs!!

On another point, although i was disappointed with the result, I can't wait until next season when we have a full pre-season with Ramos and the squad.

Baptista was a midfielder turned striker.

And no, Kaboul could become a good midfielder as well as a centre-back, but that would be the sort of midfielder King was when he was put there in his early days.

Fully agree about Kaboul's ability to move into midfield, although I see him as more of a defensive midfielder, yet being comfortable and able with the ball, to bring it out of defence.

Not sure the current crop of midfield players would suit that role for him, though.

Im gonna say no... although I like your out of the box thinking, and what with some of Ramos' tactically decisions I Wouldn't rule out the possibility completely. However I would point out that he has not tried him in midfield in any capacity thus far so I think it is unlikely to occur.

now our season's fucked in terms of winning stuff i'd love to see a CM pairing of steed and kaboul, with gilberto on the left and lennon on the right. we'd probably get buttfucked by anyone except derby playing like that though.

Perhaps we ought to get him fully acclimatised to the EPL playing as a CB before we start buggering around.

Exactly. He does possess the potential to be a star. Quick, strong, and reasonable on the ball. It's obvious that he needs to regain his confidence, which the next ten games could address this.

Would be asking far too much of him. Could shatter his confidence.

He struggles with decision making when all the play is in front of him in defence. A move into midfield would mean he'd have to be aware of play all around him. Don't think he's capable of that. Certainly not at the minute.

maybe he could be tried there in one of our supposed "easier" remaining PL fixtures. If not pre-season. Good thread yiddo. And yes i too am very excited about a ramos-prepared season in august!!

He has quick feet for a centre back, but he would look cumbersome for an attacking midfielder. Kaboul is a supremely talented player who, given the right positional tutelage from Woodgate and calm from Ledders, will turn into a fantastic centre back. He could do a job at Defensive Midfield, as he is even better on the ball than Ledley and just as physically imposing, but not attacking midfield.

Kaboul as an attacking midfielder? No ta.

If Jenas is either rested / rotated / injured I would prefer to see Steeeed getting a run in there!

I remember loads of people (not on here...) saying Rio Ferdinand should play in midfield when he was a kid at West Ham. The same things that Kaboul is accused of were being chucked at Rio, and the suggestion was to play him DM.

Well Rio carried on at CB. And you know - he became a bloody good one too.

Give Kaboul time people. He's a diamond in the rough right now, but there's a big ol' rock in there for sure

Rightly or wrongly people were always going to start calling him the new Ramon Vega, after a dodgy start for us.Needs to be given a little more time. 20 odd games bit early to start wanting him to position swap.In total agreement with spurssince57.

He could in no way play as an attacking mid, it takes a very specific set of skills to perform that role and he does not have them, and nor does any player we currently have with the exception of Berbo and Steed and possibly Taraabt if he would release the ball sooner.

There are basically 2 types, not exclusive types, an attacking mid like Lampard or Cahill who gets forward and scores goals, or an advanced player who is creative like Scholes.

We need a Scholes imo, a player who can link play and also be composed enough to do something with the ball in advanced areas. JJ the player who is supposed to do that now does not have any of the skills required. He has a poor first touch, he cannot pass with both feet, he has no composure and he does not have the technique to buy himself space when under pressure.

These players are very rare and tend to have less defensive ability, or responsibility, and thus most teams have to play 1 striker with 2 holding players to allow the creative mid to get forward.

Kaboul is not that player!
