...do the wheels fall off?

Got to say I think this man is 70% of the reason things have turned around for us.

I thought we couldn't beat Liverpool without Jenas? Isn't that what you said?

I've only just picked my self up off of the floor after someone suggested in this thread that O'Hara was a like for like replacement for Palacios. O'Hara isn't and never will be a defensive midfielder or an all action midfielder or a particulary decent midfielder. He's Mr Fucking Average.

It's not that far-fetched of a comparison. Palacios was a winger when he came to England (arguably an average one worth 2 million pounds and was turned down by arsenal, much like O'hara). And O'hara can track back and get stuck in as well as go forward decently at times much like Palacios. Obviously Palacios is much better, but also given O'hara's decent performance in the middle during preseason, he should be considered as an option if Palacios were to miss some games.

Centre midfield is the key area where games are won and lost. I'd rather have quality cover in that position than anywhere else. I'm sure we won' get anyone as good as Palacious but a more natural replacement is surely more key than anyone else we might buy this transfer window?

I've certainly not got a downer on a squad that has got us to the top of the league but I'd like us to stay there and only the most short-sighted management team doesn't plan for all eventualities.

I'll rephrase that to 'will do just fine', then.

We've dropped the interest in Sissoko due to the ridiculous price Toulouse are asking, and hardly anyone had heard of 'Sandro' (glad to know we're on first-name terms already) two days ago, much less seen him. But he's going to be fantastic, because he's Brazilian. However, since his club want crazy money for him and he's part-owned by some spiv we probably won't be seeing him either.

Long, long ago I can remember Stevie Perryman being disparaged as 'average' and compared very adversely to Alan Hudson, by our fans. Not saying O'Hara will be another Stevie, but he gets stuck in, passes well enough, chips in with the odd goal or two and works hard. Ridiculously underrated.

Jamie-O scored with his right foot tonight, and it was as good a finish as i've seen with his left. Obviously been working on that

I know i've been harping on about this but O'Hara is really decent. He doesn't get many games but the ones he has are normally stormers. He's more than adequate cover. The Hudd is doing well at keeping him on the subs bench but if anything happens to Hudd or Palacios, i'm looking forward to seeing him get a good run in the Premier League.

Speaking of The Hudd playing well, anyone see him move when he picked up the ball for the first goal? Just this large yellow streak on the screen. He's obviously being doing well with the fitness guys.

Exactly. Ultimately, 8 million gets you Zokora, and a 15 million bench player is considered a failure. Given those sums of money, I'll take my chances with O'Hara covering Palacios.

I agree with SS57. I'd be more than happy with O'Hara as back-up to Boateng, who should be back up to Palacios.

I would say as long as Palacios doesn't have a long term injury, we have enough cover in Jenas/Hudd starting and O'hara and Boateng filling in/super sub for me not to be too worried. Sure Wilson is a huge part of our success, just think we weren't very good before Jan. and since then been fantastic, not a huge shock that people think Palacios is the reason(which I agree with)

Anyone got any numbers on WP? How many points have we picked up with him in the starting lineup? Only time we struggled at the back half of last year was when WP wasn't there and dealing with the death of his brother.

Last season Palacios was available for 14 games, though he didn't play in all of them towards the end. We picked up 27 points in those 14 games, enough for 73 points if extrapolated over a season.

That said, we were on a good run of form and it's always a bit meaningless to extrapolate from a third of a season. For example, Everton had 26 from their last 14 games, and the scum would've finished in second or something if you just looked at their second half of the season. And Villa would've been relegated

I think that point is valid though. Scum / Villa / Everton didnt have a turn of fortune due to someone coming into their team though did it. It was kinda random.

Athough you could argue that since Heskey's arrival at villa park, they have been shite.

Last season; 11 premier league games. 6W, 2D, 3L. He also played in our draw against Shakhtar at home. It has to be noted though that the games he missed were West Ham (H), Everton (A), Man City (H) and Liverpool (A) and we only lost one of those, away to Liverpool. Everton was a draw and the other two were wins.

Add to that the 3 wins this season, we have:

9W. 2D. 3L.

Which is pretty impressive.

Scum - Arshavin (6 goals and 5 assists in 12 games), and Gallas no longer being captain leading to improved performances from him (I'm shocked btw that people are predicting they'll finish fourth this season. Have they even looked at their recent form? As long as they don't get horribly unlucky with injuries, they'll be in the top two.)

Everton - have been consistent since after the first two months anyways - strangely became better with no strikers

Villa - loss of Laursen, and the addition of Agent Heskey forcing them to play 4-4-2....they won at Anfield playing 4-5-1 for like the first time since Heskey arrived

We were opened up too easily last night and didn't press anything like as effectively without Wilson.

First half it was a definite worry as although we were 3-0 up, they were probably the better team for large periods.

I would stick with what we already have unless Wilson snaps a cruciate or breaks his leg in which case we can buy someone in Jan but no player of Wilson's quality is going to come in and just plonk his ass on the bench waiting for Wilson to be injured and if such a player is about I would question his ambition and commitment anyways

That's why I am not that keen on spending huge amounts of Sissoko or Sandro, they would spend their life on the bench waiting for Hudd/Wilson to be injured or suspended, not worth it
