How Much Will We Spend This Summer

Just came across this article which obviously could well be rubbish, but it got me wondering about how much we'll spend in total this summer.

I'd love to see us break our single fee record for a striker. I don't think we'll get the quality we need for less than we paid for Bentley anyway. But in total it could well be our biggest yet.

Does anyone know what the most we've spent in a summer is?

I think we could make a single signing between 16 & 20 million, but I think we will spend about 60 million in total for the players we need.

Wtf?! I'm not sure that I share this obsession with spending record amounts of money. For me, the hallmark of a successful transfer window is how much value you can get out of the limited funds available. One of the reasons why we are now contenders is down to Daniel Levy's shrewd and financially competent stewardship of the club.

Thank the Lord he also doesn't have an obsession with smashing transfer budgets.

I'm actually quite optimistic that Baldini will have a decent sized transfer kitty to work with this summer and wouldn't be surprised to see us break our most expensive signing record

Maybe/maybe not. I think we'll spend some money but not be ridiculous. I think if nothing else, I believe it will make us more attractive to players. We seemed more attractive when we had Comolli...

our biggest ever net spend was 07/08 at around £34m.

our biggest gross spend was 08/09 at £87m but we also sold £68m worth of players.

our net spend over the last five years combined is £7.65m. averaging at £1.53m per season.

£50-£60M spending I'd say offset by around £20M in sales

In:
CM (Paulinho?) - £15Mish
Striker (Leandro/Villa/Soldado) - £10-20M
Wing Forward or 3rd choice striker (Bernard or young striker like a Cornelius) £5-15M
Maybe a CB or LB depending on what's going on with Kaboul and BAE
Plus probably a couple youth prospects (like Can or Marrone)

Out:
Hudd (£5-6M)
Livermore (£4-5M)
Defoe (£8M)
Possibly Naughton or BAE (£5-8M)

Cheers mate. Interesting stuff. I'm more interested in how much people think we will spend, rather than how much we will have spent after sales though. We are generally quite shrewd in the transfer market (a few mistakes aside, cough Bentley cough). However with £20m+ transfer fees becoming more common than ever it makes me wonder how long it will be before we bite that bullet. And if/when we do bite that bullet, I would expect our overall outlay to be considerably more than we have seen before.

The thread was just to provoke a bit of discussion. I have full faith in the Spurs hierarchy to buy value. I don't have an obsession with smashing transfer budgets. Just thought it would be interesting to hear other peoples thoughts on how much we'd spend.

Assuming we recruit what we need, it could be something like:

LB - £8-£15m
MF - £12-£20m
ST - £18-£30m

= ~£50m

.. but knowing Levy he will get each of those for half of that

Levy has proven that he will pay the money when he feels it is in our best interests to do so. I suspect that where we have been going wrong is being able to identify the right players and having somebody who can help the deals to go smoothly.

I reckon that we will buy 3 big players (wide forward, main forward, creative mid) plus another youngster or 2. That will cost us the best part of 50-60 million, but in time-honoured Levy style we will offset that by selling (Defoe, Hudd, Livermore, BAE).

Our net spend will be in the region of 30-35 million.

between £ 5 M and £ 10 M more than we make through sales, unless we sell Bale - then it will be £ 50 M less than we make through sales

I expect Defoe, Huddlestone, Assou-Ekotto, Parker, Gomes, Livermore and Adebayor all to be moved on

I disagree to some extent. Spurs have been lacking in certain positions for quite a long time, particularly up front and in defense. Every transfer window we hear about all the big names Levy is trying to sign but never seems to succeed. Instead we end up with loans and midfielders when we are already over staffed there. Levy will not break the bank to sign a player but will look for a bargain basement option to appease the fans. Whoever we sign up front will probably be in their 30's and almost at the end of their career so we get them cheap.

Every season we end up waiting till the last day of the window for the deal that doesn't happen but lets Levy deflect fans anger by pointing out that he tried. All the other teams manage to identify and sign who they need early except us. Perhaps I am a little skeptical but I have seen the same thing happen over and over again. If the willingness to spend was truly there, we would have bought key players already and would not be challenging for a CL place but would be there already. Instead we get linked with all these top names and some random event will prevent the signing. Still, we don't need to spend more money to sell all the season tickets and fill WHL....

post of the day, agree 100%

PS - if David Villa is that over 30 attacker I'll be happy
