When Luka Modric joined Tottenham Hotspur 16 years ago, several coaches warned he would "get murdered" in the centre of the pitch.

At club level, natch. Ossie got a WC tho.

Edit: Luka never beat the third reich at football with a rainbow flick either... :D
In terms of trophies won, it's not even close:
Ossie: 1x World Cup, 1x UEFA Cup, 2x domestic cup
Modric: 5x Champions League, 5x Club World Cup, 4x UEFA Super Cup, 5x league, 4x domestic cup

I know some would argue that winning the World Cup is the ultimate achievement for a player (even though the Champions League is a higher standard), and that international achievements surpass club achievements, but which is most impressive?

Winning a 16-team World Cup with one of the strongest footballing nations, hosted in his home country, in the midst of a military coup a significant controversy.

OR

Single-handedly dragging a relatively small footballing nation to 2nd & 3rd place in consecutive 32-team World Cups, plus 2nd place in the UEFA Nations League, and winning the following individual awards in the process:
Balon d'Or
World Cup Golden Ball
FIFA Player of the Year
UEFA Player of the Year
And a whole host of other less recognised awards

I'm under 50 though, so what do I know? 😅

All of that is at Real though. I mean for Spurs.

Tbh, these questions are never really about who's the best, its more an excuse to wax lyrical about two class footballers who played in similar positions for us. I'd say with most Spurs fans, there's going to be a lot more fondness for Ossie.

I was responding to this. The World Cup wasn't with Spurs...

Using trophies to gauge how good an individual player is a useless metric for measuring their class. The game is played with 11 men under instruction of a manager.

As spurs fans we should know this better than anyone having watched Kane play for us for the last decade.

It's the same nonsense opposition fans will try and use to claim that Kane is not world class or that 'Henry is 10x the player' etc. (whether or not you think Henry is better is irrelevant here but imo the comparison is a lot closer than the general consensus seems to be due to Kane's lack of trophies)

Anyway. Modric and Ossie were/ are both geniuses...

I've never understood this 'is he world class as he hasn't won any titles'. Luka won titles at RM, but they would have won them with or without him as they had a lot of good players. These players usually join teams that win trophies every year as it's easier to win in their league, or they historically always win in Europe.
