My previously unwavering support for Gomes is now, I must admit, starting to falter. It's just happening far too often now. As likeable as he is, Gomes does NOT fill me with confidence.
More importantly, how much confidence do you think he gives our defenders....

Too many mistakes, too weak, too indecisive and too dramatic.

He's a good shot stopper and can have excellent games but I think he's had his chance to introduce some consistency, failed and it's time for a change.

Gomes has been average this season. No better, no worse. He hasnt had too many stand out games that I can think off, but has made a fair few mistakes. A top class keeper saves 3 of Madrids 5 goals IMHO.
He can be fantastic on his day, but too error prone. We cant afford costly mistakes in big games.
(now watch him have a sensational run in between now and end of the season).

Gomes is the modern day Grobbelaar, capable of both world class saves and moments of absolute madness. TBH he's no different from most of the other players we have - if we can upgrade him we should, but it won't be easy to find someone.

Personally I'd like to see a graphic of the balls movement last night to see just how bad his mistake was. Like one of the pundits said the ball seemed to really move through the air.

IMHO to ge to the 'next level' we need a new keeper or serious work done with Gomes in the summer. Has Tony Parkes gone?
Lennon really needs to start producing the goods. For a player with so much pace he doesnt create enough goal scoring opportunities and disappears too often in games.
We need VDV to rediscover his early season form and play like that for the entire season. A full preseason should help his fitness and contribute towards this.
And we need to sign a bloody striker. Drogba, Adebayor, Llorente or someone in that mould. Big, powerful, pace. LEad the line and get on the end of things. How many assists would BAle have if we have a quality striker on the end of his crosses? I think he'd be challenging Nani's 18 this season.

For me, out with Keane, Pav, Giovani, Hutton, O'Hara, Bentley and Jenas, along with King and Woodgate.
We'll have Walker coming back, sign a GK, Gary Cahill, Ashley Young and Drogba. Squad tweaked, much stronger all over the pitch, and competition for Bale, Lennon and VDV from Young.

reina is seen as a top class keeper but makes just as many howlers.whoever we got to replace gomes i believe would not be able to make the same number of world class saves.his saves to shots ratio is much better than most.

Idiotic comments on this thread. He made a mistake. In the end, I'd rather he made it last night in a meaningless game than next Weds and so on. As Redknapp said, he has routinely made saves he has no right to make and when it rains it pours with him but no way on earth is he costing us more than he is saving us. That is patent rubbish.

If we could get someone guaranteed to be better than him, great, but we won't so support our players, recognise their flaws and mistakes for what they are and move on.

Reina does not make as many howlers as Gomes. Reina is a top class keeper. Able to produce world class saves, commands his area well, has excellent distribution and instills confidence in his defence. I also believe his decision making is excellent in general.

On his day, Gomes is a superb shot stopper - better than Reina, however I would question his focus, distribution and decision making. Just using corners, or any free kick into the box, I think his 'have a go' approach at trying to get to the ball (sometimes works to his credit), does concern the defence.

I like Gomes and last nights mistake did not mean anything other than we could have claimed a goalless draw against Real Madrid, but the goalkeeper is measured by his mistakes, and I certainly believe he has more than his fair share. Either he reduces these, or we have to look to a new keeper in the Summer (which will be a difficult task).

Bale blatantly cost us a goal vs Stoke when he gave the ball away. Suggest we ship him out too.

I think Reina makes just as many mistakes as Gomes. I also thinks Gomes gains the team more points than Reina does Liverpool.

Except he doesnt. Hes made a couple of high profile ones this season for sure, but Gomes seems to be dropping a bollock every game or two now!

You've got to remember we notice Gomes' mistakes more as we watch more spurs games than Liverpools.

I think a lot of fans have rose tinted glasses when it comes to Gomes. Certain players get that 'cult' status, and he seems to have it, because he makes saves that perhaps other keepers cannot and he touches the crossbar with his shoulder for the fans. However that aside, you go back through the season and look at the errors he makes, or the ones that he makes, but just gets away with and I think there is evidence enough that the defence do not trust him.

its good we haven't made a scapegoat out of him...

it was a poor bit of goalkeeping, but we were already long, long gone from the competition before that error.

i have to agree with these two comments.

Dawson (who was excellent last night btw) and the rest must shit themselves constantly!

and gomes is known by all other fans as a clown and prone to mistakes. Reina isnt and there is a reaosn for this! the comment that said reina makes as many as him is laughable. :duh:

the comment about how many he gets away with is also a valid one as they get forgotten about. He makes a clanger / mistake in nearly every game recently. he got lucky last night with a madrid shot he let under him but went past the post.

Gomes on his day is superb, but ive now got tired of defending him as it happenning to often. the whole "he saves us more points than he loses" im not so sure about anymore.

i just wish he could cut most of his errors as he'd then be a top class goalie. but thats just not gonna happen sadly

Neither of those statements is remotely true.

Reina is probably the best keeper in the Premiership, now Cech's lost some of his old form, and is one of the top keepers in the world.

Gomes is good, and I love him to bits at times, but he does make pretty regular mistakes, as well as some ridiculous spectacular saves.

There is something of a dearth of real top-class keepers out there in world football at the moment, or at least it seems that way, because their mistakes are highlighted so much more these days (not just by the 'serious' media, but on YouTube 'fail' videos etc).

The only other (realistic) keeper I'd really be happy with in place of Gomes would be Tim Howard. Got a lot of time for him.
