Vela tips Giovani to star at Spurs

Arsenal's Carlos Vela says his international team-mate Giovani Dos Santos will use his move to Spurs as a stepping stone to greater things.

Vela, who has yet to appear for the Gunners after spending the last two seasons on loan at Celta Vigo, Salamanca and Osasuna in Spain, came to prominence alongside Giovani as the two spearheaded Mexico's strikeforce in the country's Under-17 World Cup triumph in 2005.
Vela signed for Arsenal shortly after that tournament, but was forced to go out on loan due to work permit requirements in the UK.
Giovani was already contracted to Barcelona at that point and looked set to follow in the illustrious footsteps of fellow youth team graduate Lionel Messi.
However, following a difficult debut season with the Catalan club, the Mexico forward was transferred to Tottenham last week in a deal which could be worth up to 11 million euros.
Vela believes Giovani will be a hit in England.
"I am happy for him," he said.
"I hope things go well for him at Tottenham, that he gets the minutes he wasn't given at Barcelona and that he shows what he can do.
"He is a very good player and let's hope he can then move on to a better team."
Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Vela, who scored in Mexico's 4-0 win over Peru on Sunday, will be included in the Gunners' first-team squad next season.
And he is hoping more senior action will help him catch the eye of new Mexico boss Sven-Goran Eriksson.
"He has a job to do. He will be in charge from the 21st and has to look at all of the players, to see who he wants and who he doesn't want," added Vela.
"I hope to be involved, obviously."
Vela believes the former Manchester City and England coach will bring new ideas to Mexico.
"It will be something different, something we haven't had here before and hopefully we will improve," he said.

He's a cheeky fucker!
There are several links quoting him on NewsNow basically be-littling us and implying that Dos Santos is too good for us and will only be using us a stepping stone - a la Berbatov?.

Well, lets face it, he's probably right. Buuuut, if we get enough players treating teh club as a stepping stone, who's to say they won't pull together and prove to themselves that they don't need to move on to enjoy CL footie.

Don Juande Ramos sez:

"If Giovani progresses as we hope he will be a terrific player. This is a young player with a lot of potential, whom I have watched for some time and I am delighted he has joined the squad.

"For us it is an exciting signing because he has excellent quality, he operates well in different positions and, above all, is technically excellent."

I entirely agree, and it's interesting that Ramos mentions Gio's versatility. Dos Santos has fantastic technique, and I suspect Juande will use him on both flanks and occasionally down the middle.

GDS: "As a young player I have come to a club where I feel there are many opportunities for me."

JR: "If Giovani progresses as we hope he will be a terrific player."

These quotes suggest to me that GDS has not been bought in as a straight-to-starting-11 player and will begin on the bench, at least at the start of the season. I'm sure he'll get lots of game time (more and more throughout the year) and some starts (most likely at home), but I doubt he'll be on the pitch when the first game of the season kicks off.

Carlos Vela is hoping compatriot Giovani Dos Santos enjoys his move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Dos Santos secured a switch to White Hart Lane last week after failing to establish himself in the Barcelona team.
In North London, he will be reunited with Vela after the pair played key roles in Mexico's Under 17 World Cup win in 2005.
Vela is on the books of Arsenal and is now free to make his debut for the club after securing a work permit following two seasons on loan in Spain.

Very good player

The Gunners attacker is looking forward to meeting up with Dos Santos and feels his international colleague can be a success at White Hart Lane.
"I am happy for him," said Vela.
"I hope things go well for him at Tottenham, that he gets the minutes he wasn't given at Barcelona and that he shows what he can do.
"He is a very good player and let's hope he can then move on to a better team."
