Win at Watford pushes us to...

Total: +8pts
Current projection: 72pts

We now enter a period of three games that we won last season, can we match that before the next opportunity add further points?

Everton (a) – W
Leicester (h) – W
Sunderland (h) – W
Palace (a) – L

I'd be over the moon with 9 points from those 4 games. Although that'll be tough enough, the greedy part of me hopes we sneak 12...

There'd be a meltdown if we did, as Arsenal have Liverpool and Stoke away in the same run of fixtures...

This time last season we had won 9 as well but lost 6 and had 31 points. We have scored 9 more and conceded 9 less than at the same time last season. That is a major Improvement.

The win at Watford has now seen us catch up with our progress in the 13/14 season but we're still 7pts behind where we were during the 12/13 season.

The main thing this highlights for me is that we're not actually getting as many points on the board as we seem to think and our league position is mainly due to other teams dropping more points than usual. While we are 8pts above last season we are level with the season before and 7pts below the season before that. If we look at it as a 4year average then we are bang on where we should be and should expect to finish the season on around 68/69 pts

I've always thought that these comparisons are completely superfluous and based on a specious premise. The amount of points a team accrues are only relative to the season in which they accrue them and not relevant at all in future seasons.

Great thread nicdic, in terms of fan satisfaction I think we're ahead of last year too.

It is interesting to look at this, but I'm not sure that it has much value. It doesn't detract from where we are this season at all. All that matters is we get more points than teams this season. I expect the winners of the league will get a lower points tally than we would normally see, and the points of the top four will be lower too. It's the way this season is going.

We usually get one of these going each season, hadn't seen one yet, so here we go...

We compare the match this season with the same match from last season, replacing the relegated clubs with the promoted clubs. Shows us how we're comparing to the same games last season.

Key: Fixture, result last season, result this season, point difference.

Hull > Bournemouth
Burnley > Watford
QPR > Norwich

Man Utd (a) – L – L 0pts
Stoke (h) – L – D +1pts
Leicester (a) – W – D -2pts
Everton (h) – W – D -2pts
Sunderland (a) – D – W +2pts
Palace (h) – D – W +2pts

Last 10 matches:

Arsenal (h) – W
Villa (a) – W
Bournemouth (h) – W
Liverpool (a) – L
Man Utd (h) – D
Stoke (a) – L
West Brom (h) – L
Chelsea (a) – L
Southampton (h) – W
Newcastle (a) – W

Tough. I suspect we will draw the goons, they always play well in their last 10.
We ought to beat Villa, Bournemouth, WBA and Soton. Not sure about Liverpool, Man Utd, Stoke, Chelsea or Newcastle though.
If we nab the first 12pts then I think getting ≥10pts from the trickier fixtures could see us right up at the top end (4th being a foregone conclusion by then).

Trouble is we really fatigue by then. The run after the Liverpool game in Feb followed by crazy fixtures with the Fiorentina and Chelsea game that interrupted our brilliant form really cost us dearly. Hope we have the squad to cope this term.

Table below says that we and Arsenal have been the form teams over the last 14 games, averaging just over 3 points a game, whilst the two Mancs are some way behind.

Hopefully we can keep this up !

Well, here is one stat...

Last time, Our defense was so good mid-season (end of 19 games) with just less than 3 games lost....yep...1960/61 double winning season

Europa League and FA Cup double is possible, just can't see us winning the league.

Very interesting points there aliyid.

Something worth noting though, if all the games last season were in the same order as this season, this is where we would have been after 19 games:

L4L 14-15.jpg

This shows how better we are doing in both points and league position.

In fact, if we had the same points haul as last season right now we would be sitting in 10th spot, not 4th!

At the moment the game for game comparison final table is looking like this:

L4L Forecast.jpg

We're sitting nicely in 3rd spot. Obviously I would expect to see Chelsea further down and Leicester further up.
