Have to agree with @mpickard2087 in that it's not the tactics but the execution.

For the first 25 minutes of the game yesterday I really was not worried at all. Marseille went man for man in a press and with us dropping our midfielders and defensive line back it left acres of space both in behind and between their midfield and backline for us to exploit. We fluffed so many opportunities to take advantage of this in the first 25 minutes but I just thought it was matter of time before we got it right and punished them. Unfortunately from about 25 minutes we got even more careless with the ball and with our forwards losing pretty much every single battle we really struggled in that period.

Second half we came out and immediately we looked much better on the ball. We were just that little bit sharper, took more care in possession and stopped trying to force things that weren't really there. You might look at that game and say Marseille were in control but they were ripe for picking off which we did pretty much straight after half time by getting Son in behind and forcing the red card.

Confused. You are more interested in the fortunes of a rival than Tottenham?
I'm not interested in Chelsea's fortunes at all, but I am interested in how Potter get's them playing, so I'll probably watch the football.

Conversely, I massively interested and invested in our fortunes, but increasingly uninterested in watching the actual football, if all we're doing is grinding out results. I can check the results to follow our fortunes. Until we get to important cup matches, that is.

That's not really confusing you, is it?

Well of course it does, it's me saying it.

Lol, fair.

Just a weird thing to say in the Conte thread on Spurs forum.

Ultimately I get you're not enjoying the football.

I find beauty in watching a team evolve and I personally think Contes pragmatic, tactical approach has been incredible to witness.

I think a little more patience may go a long way here.

Can't really see what the problems are that some on here are moaning about, talk about entitled. Would you rather we go out and lose every game 5-4 and see attacking all guns blazing football, or win every game 1-0 or 2-0, shit housing on every team we play. Liverpool got gubbed by 4 last ngiht and we won, you'd honestly think it was the other way around reading some posts on here.....

Some need to give their head a wobble if they're not enjoying this.

Today I'm singing the new europa theme tune to my west ham pal sitting next to me and loving every minute !!!
Yeah grass is always greener.

There are very few teams out there that play attractive football AND challenge at the top of their leagues without basically buying their way there. We're never going to do be as good on the ball as City, so I'm fine with us trying a different approach if it yields results.

Under Harry we were a great watch but we only qualified for the CL once and never really looked like winning anything, despite having a fantastic squad. Under Poch we were scintillating for the first 3 seasons but again won sweet FA.

Now that Conte's here I'm not gonna moan about his football if we're getting results. Under Jose the results never looked sustainable, but it feels like we're building something with Conte and I'm happy to put up with some teething problems with the playing style when almost everything else feels great atm.

It’s confusing me. You didn’t get any joy from seeing the team walk out last night for our first CL game at home in over two years? Seeing the ball hit the net for 1-0 and 2-0 ? Richarlison’s reaction at the final whistle? You’d experience the same feelings just checking the score online at FT?

He is doing this entirely on purpose. I think this may be required reading for every fan.

The analysis of the way City set-up and press highlights why Romero, Dier, Bentacur, Højbjerg, Son, Kane, and Deki will also start on Saturday and not Sanchez. The way we set-up, press, and operate is categorically different than City and we will need these players in particular to have strong games if we are to pass through their press, get behind their back line, and get a result. It also makes the debate between Davies and Lenglet very interesting considering their qualities.

This article also highlights what many of us thought when the fixture list came out: if we can stay around the top until the World Cup, we are very well set-up for a title run.

I can get all that on highlights, without the agony of watching the constant back passing, the concession of the middle of the pitch, the deliberate and obvious refusal to even try to play with the ball at feet in that part of the pitch…

Fuck it, not important now…

Really well put and couldnt agree more. Watching the game i thought it was only a matter of time until we got it right and exploited the ridiculously high line that they were playing.

Look, I agree with this, but it will be a long time before we know whether or not it wins silverware. At this rate, I'm close to just checking the results, waiting untill we get to a semi-final at least. More interested in watching Chelsea, to see how Potter does.
Fucking hell

I do understand what you are saying and I respect your view.

I appreciate that you're not enjoying the ceding of space makes our football more tense to watch because the ball is closer to our goal than the opponents.

I do, however, think that by not watching the football its makes it more likely that you may fall prone to the "out of context" judgments that a lot of pundits tend to make about our football being defensive or being dominated when actually its all part of the plan.

Having said that if you're not enjoying the football i guess you may already think that

It's still far too early in the season to worry too much about performances.
Richarlison, Perisic, and Lenglet have now shown they are of the required quality whilst we still have Bissouma, Skipp, Doherty, and Spence to return/integrate properly.
And Son and Kane are not going to be ropey forever.
We were even able to bring on Davies and Tanganga to turn around a CL game (although none of us knew how/why at the time!)

We're currently going through a transition period and if we're getting results already then I see little to worry about as it will only get better.

I look at the likes of Arsenal and Utd and I think they'll play nice football on a nice day. I think they'll struggle when the conditions are not so nice and when they need to be more physical. I see City as the only team who can really play exciting football all the time and often win but that's because they have more world class players. I can't see any other teams match them in that regards. Chelsea may play nice football under Potter but then I do wonder if they will be the same physical side to grind out results. They still fall short of the quality that City possess to win often enough and play nice football though. Liverpool and Spurs are a bit more capable of grinding out results but still play nice football too.

I think the Conte style is one that is well drilled and tough to beat. I can see why his teams have won titles. I personally enjoy watching us play but we're certainly not at our best yet. The difference is that we still get results when not on it and don't often look like conceding. So it's not like we're not playing well, we're defending well just not clicking on the ball and the final ball is lacking. That side of things will come though I'm sure. When we're fully firing we can thrash teams outside the top 7.
