If memory serves we were I think the first club to put in place of DoF structure with Arnesen, which was completely alien to British football, where the manager was all powerful and made every decision. Now its the accepted norm.

Levy (of whom I am no fan) was ahead of his time - as usual the idea was a good one, but the execution could have been a lot better !!
I think Lawrie Mac was the first that I can remember at Southampton.

Yeah Arnesen definitely wasn’t the first director of football. We had David Pleat in the late 90s early 00s for a start.

good shout the fans noticing only Hojberg stood up when meeting conte, you never stay seated when shaking hands with another male for the first time, just confirms we got a bunch of betas in our team.

Now Conte saw it first hand?

I think this is more or less right, but only to a certain extent. More frequently a manager stays at a club for 2-3 seasons if not successful, and sometimes even if they are so. A player, though, is often (if in early to mid 20's) signed for 5 years. That player is more often than not going to outlast the manager at a club.

The chairman is going to have to consider what the 'exit strategy' (ugh) is for that player. He might be Conte's absolute must have, but will (eg) Pochettino want him? Does he only fit Conte's system, or will he thrive in a different set-up? Will we have an unhappy player on high wages and depreciating value that a new manager can't fit into his team?

In short, is the chairman buying Conte his favourite toy, or is he buying an investment for the club? Inevitably the chairman needs to understand, and on some level 'judge' the player.

(This isn't about Conte, or Levy, or Spurs particularly. Just an observation about buying players).
It's a dilemma for chairman no doubt, I guess ultimately it comes down to how much the chairman believes in the manager or director of football.
If for example, Conte signs a player that is bespoke to hIs system, then we see the best version of that player, then even if he doesn't fit in with Conte's successor his value will still be high

Whoever was sat with PEH stood as well, based on where AC was looking when he shook their hand. But I get what you're saying.

Need to bring the camaraderie we had under Poch, everyone shaking hands with each other every day. Built a bond.

Sadly, people just don't seem to be taught manners and etiquette these days.
The 'gentleman' is a dying breed.

for what it’s worth, alasdair gold confirmed in his latest video that the option to extend Conte’s deal is our option, not his (saw some suggestions otherwise)

essentially a 2.5 year contract

Absolutely correct imo, I spent 25 years in the Emergency Services and when I first joined everyone stood up when a Senior Officer came into the room. It’s not really about respecting the person it’s about respecting in that world his rank.

I always automatically stand up when being introduced to someone for the first time and thinking back I always did automatically. I don’t remember being taught that maybe I just observed it.

Anyway borefest over. ??

It’s not just about respect either, it’s about attitude and body language. If your new boss comes over to you to introduce himself, you stand up and match their attitude, show them you aren’t lazy etc.

We are talking about arrogant pampered footballers who in the main are pretty thick. I’m sure they don’t really know how to behave civilly in many situations.

True. I think it’s part of the reason coaches like Mourinho can’t get a tune out of players any more. They expect a level of self discipline and an attitude that just isn’t present in modern players. That’s not to say the current crop of players can’t be professional or dedicated, I just think their used to having everything laid out to them, fitness schedules, diet, when to shit and when to shag, etc etc.

And for the record, I've absolutely never greeted anyone, let alone my new boss whilst sat on my arse. WTF
